I have a chance to pick-up a John Deere #5 sickle bar mower for a few $$. It is currently fitted to mount on a Ford 8N three point hitch. My question is - will this arrangement work on a Massey Ferguson 35 three point hitch or any other class 1 three point hitch?

What is your opinion of this mower, when were they made and are parts still available?

Thanks in advance,
Bill

I have No.5 mower with 3 pt. hook. It works fine as long as you use either ford style drawbar braces, fron top link to ends of arms, or the ferguson style braces for massey. The massey ones go from bottom of axle to pin on side of lift arm. I used ford style ones until I got massey ones. I think I did have to lengthen the ford style. Still use mower w/Massey 65, but am trying to sell mower. also have JD crimper.

There was an old bachelor around when I was a kid and he had a JD #5 mounted on an 8n and he would cut hay for almost everybody on the creek for fuel, lunch and $20.00 a day back in the 60's. He had a mount that came off of the two big fender bolts where the sway bars normaly go and the cutter bar was lifted by the hyd lift arm and a cable and pulley setup. He took the 3 point arms completely off the tractor. I was running a IH H and a #5 JD then as well and we could knock down a lot of hay in a 14 hour day.

The #5 is not meant to be a semi-integral mounted mower, in the sense that it would hook up to the lower draft arms. The #5 was meant to clamp directly onto cylendrical fittings mounted directly on the rear drawbar frame. The mower used a remote cylinder to raise and lower the cutterbar, and there was a lever for altering the pitch. The OM distinctly says it's NOT RECOMMENDED for use with three point. Of course, IF you securely brace the 3ph so that there is no sway at all, and never touch the lever to raise/lower the hitch, it is possible to attach one. 35 years ago, my father used a #5 with a JD420 (using a special jury rigged contraption). You COULD locate a mower that's a bit newer and specificlly adapted for 3ph!

Amen. Not quite as extreme, but it reminds me a little of the guy who wanted to cut and bale hay with his pickup. There are comparably priced machines available that will do the job correctly and be safer.

John Deere had an option to connect the No 5 to an 8N, but it was a bit complicated. You had to disconnect the left arms from the lower arms on the 3 pt. Put on the 2 stabalizer arms and the drawbar to the ends of the 3 pt, and attach to the top link. Bolted the No 5 bar to the drawbar. Sickle bar was lifted by a cable or chain that was attached to the lift mechanisim on the mower, then ran to a pulley mounted to the right of the pto and up to the disconnected lift arm. Note you also needed the old style bar coupler on the mover, not the later style quick attach. Oh yea, you needed a longer pto shaft on the mower as well. If any of this make sense, it's a miracle. Like I said, it was a bit complicated. Loren

Bill - Look at it this way. It was never meant to fit the Ford 3pt so if it doesn't fit yours you can modify it. These are great mowers, I currently have two, but there are a lot of others that are good that come with three point hitch.
In my experience, some of the older three point equipment is not always as readily interchangeable as the newer stuff is. I have a old Ford 3pt sickle that does not easily mount on my newer Ford. Only way to tell is to hook on and run it.

I have used a #5 to mow lots of hay. Never hooked to a 3 point though except to lift the bar. I had one once that I got on a trade that was set up to hook to a 3 point and had a cylinder to lift the bar. It was pretty badly cobbled up but supposedly worked. I agree it is good tohave an extra one for parts as some of the bigger stuff can get real expensive through deere if still aailable. How does it hook to 3 point? Does the whole mower lift?

This mower will work just fine on your tractor. As for the mower they were one of the best at the time. But like anything that old it has mowed lots of hay and will mow lots more. I,m sure parts are easliy gotten from john deere dealer or farm store. If the sections and the ledger plate are good shape it will mow most anything that you would want to bale. I have one that i use on my super h that has a 3 pt and works just fine.

never owned one but have heard they are great mowers. currently know four guys running them and i know they wouldn't trade them for anything. parts are still available but it might be more cost effective to find a few more mowers for parts. sickles, pitman sticks are readily available from any farm store and other heavy parts can still be had from deere. as far as the mounts, if it doesn't fit i'm sure it can be made to fit fairly easy.

In my opinion, the JD #5 mower may be the best sickle bar mower ever built to mow alfalfa with.
I have 2 plus a parts mower that have been terrific. However, I have an IH 1300 balanced head mower that is much better to mow bench terraces with and will cut weeds out of fresh CRP
at a much faster ground speed. I still use a #5
on alfalfa though.
