First Try with 350 Sickle Mower

I mowed some waterways this weekend (3ft tall thick grass) with my "new" 350 sickle mower. It worked pretty good when cutting uphill-but downhill the grass tended to fall forward bunch up in front of the sickle and I would have to raise the bar to throw it off.

First I know the sickle is way dull-and I have ordered a new one.

I am not sure if the dull sickle was the problem or maybe I was going too slow-first time out so I was crawling.

Does it help to go a little faster when mowing with the sickle? How fast do you guys usually run?

I cut tall grass with a 7' mower and an 8N; if it's level and stove-free, it cuts best in 3rd gear. 1st and 2nd are too slow, and the grass falls forward. I keep it sharp and well adjusted.

Agree with Butler on tilting back slightly.

I have to go in 1st gear of 4 or would have preferred 1st of 6 if had it even with new guide bar.

Never had a new one so don't know what to expect. Maybe if the guides were new also, the squeeze space for the stems would be smaller and maybe would cut better/faster. Mine have pretty good slop.

I personally feel that the sickle is made for tall stemmy crops.

When my grandfather taught me how to mow with the MF#31 sickle, he always said to cut as fast as you can without plugging or running down the hay. Of course if you're cutting rough ground or around obstructions, you have to go slow. I still clip some slopes with the old 31. I tilted the cutterbar angle up (don't know if the 350 has this adjustment) and it helps a little where you're forced to cut downhill, and also jumps over stones better.
