Assuming like condition and a fair but different price on each, which If these balers would you suggest for light use in the future. John Deer model 17T , New Holland Model 273 hayliner, or Ford of unknown model. The Ford is suspect as the present owner has just replaced it with an older John Deer. Brand names do not concern me but ease of repair maintenance and possible parts do.

My husband has an New Holland Model 273 hayliner and I was wonder if anyone could tell me what could be the problem cause it is cutting too close to the knot when we are baleing. Also does anyone know where I could find a manual for it too. Thanks for any help.

Now guy don't forget massey they also made a good baler to.but today you only have a handful of people that still make balers. Whatever you get make sure you still can get parts in 10-15 yrs for it

Buck,
Any of the three are good balers. It would help to know whether the Ford baler was red or blue to help place an age on it. In general the Ford baler does not have the following a JD or a NH does but alot of that has to do with branding. Ford stopped bulding balers when they bought NH. Parts will probably be more available for the JD and NH as Ford comes in behind them in the Case NH merger but what Ford parts I have needed have been available. I think some repricing has occured with the NH parts on older balers because my parts guy was telling me last month that the two were equal pretty much regarding prices on needles and such. All three brands use the same style knotter and appear to me, to have some parts interchangable. I would always recommend that you find and buy a parts baler of the same model no matter what you have. Compare the prices, see if they are worn out and decide which one would be better supported in your area if you don't want to be the one to work on it. Let me warn you though that I can only afford to own my baler if I work on it. They are not cheap items to repair

I just purchased a 273 baler. The previous owner parked it due to packing too much material on one side and ejecting warped bales. I presume there is a feeder issue here. Any suggestions? Thanks

can't say anything about the JD as I've 'no - not any - nada ' experience with them.....

have a NH 273 & a Ford 542 ..... .....

the 273 is a sweetheart, has always treated me good..... parts available through the NH dealership, (although they generally have to order them)....

the ford was 'past wore out' when I got it..... part prices ordered under the 'ford' name are some higher (ie.. plunger bearings --- same part/item, just different part number --- several $$'s difference)to 'pricey' (billhooks, twine disks - lots of $$'s difference) than parts ordered under the NH number..... .....

have got the ford redone to the point..... .just as soon hook on to it to go do a custom baling job as I had the 273..... ..(just depends on where each is currently parked, & which one is clean enough, compared to the field I'm going to..... ..(ie, won't carry a baler to a field of coastal/alicia/jiggs/etc.. that just baled bahai if'n I haven't got it cleaned & blown out good..)(will spend a few minutes cleaning & blowing one out vs. a 20 mile transport).....

there is a 'feeder fork' issue with the ford balers..... (some info in the manuals was incorrect on how to time the forks -- set wrong they don't feed the material into the bale chamber well & there is a bottle neck of material going into the bale chamber..... .set right -- the baler is capable of handling a full throat windrow, comparible to the other brands)

Jerry D., can give you all the specs on the ford models..... (he'll probably give you a response when he has time)

I assume you meant JD 14T. I'd go with the Green One. Still plenty around for parts and if you like tinkering, you'll have lots of fun! Be sure to get the manual for whichever one you choose. HTH

Yes 14T it is, my mistake. And yes I like tinkering. Untill it comes time to go to work. Do you mean that I will need a tool truck nearby or that the 14t will miss a bale every now and again. Thanks for the info.

JD make over 75K of them-somebody must have liked them!|:)| It's a tried and true machine. My point is you have to understand what makes them tick in order to get proper use out of them. I look at my as a challenge to figure out. This site and others have lots of posts on the 14T. Again, with the manual and some trial & error, it will likely keep baling for a long time. I haven't managed to wear mine out yet. In fact, it will most likely wear me out first!

Both JD & NH made/ make very good balers, and parts are easy to find. You will not go wrong with either color, I would go for the baler that has least wear, closest dealer, best capibility for the price, etc.

One person on this forum really likes Ford balers, most sell for worthless scrap _locally_, I really have no experience myself....

Actually, there's more than one Ford baler person on the forum. We've formed a quasi-official association/support group.

My 542 is nowhere near as dependable yet as Garry's, but it's getting there.

It's true they sell many times for worthless scrap (mine was free), but that can also mean that with some tinkering and a few parts you could get a good running baler for not much money. That's a definite consideration for me, at least. I only do this as a "hobby". The money I get selling hay to my sister (only customer) barely pays for tractor gas.

I can't get the link to work properly. Garry is in the process of having his ISP change names so it may be a slight technical issue with that
