Farmhand Loader on 4020

I just bought a 4020D with a farmhand loader on it. I don't know the model on the loader, but it has a single cylinder in the middle that is suppossed to mount to the bottom of the bucket or bale spear. The previous owner had it "rigged" with a lot of sloppy welding and another cylinder mounted in a differentlocation. The spear would not move far enough to load a bale on the tope of a trailer. I bought a new cylinder like is supposed to be on it. I tried to use it today and when I put a bale on it it would not pull the bale back. It would actually work forward a little and the bale would fall off if I went to fast. Everything else works on the tractor(hydraulic system). The loader will lift the bale with the two side cylinders fine. The loader has two levers one up and down and one for tilt. What do you all think the problem is? The tilt action works fine until I put a bale on it then it won't move up at all. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks
Ray B

Mornin' Ray,

Thanks for taking the time to snap the pictures; worth a thousand words and all that.

Rick had it right from the get-go; and I agree with him and all the others.

The angles are all wrong on this head. Everything is trying to pivot around the same axis with only about an inch or so of actual "throw" for your tilt cylinder to work against.

However, how's about if you extended that center bracket straight back about a foot, or maybe even 15"? Is there room and clearance for the upper part of the cylinder to 'swing' back a little?

This arrangement needs more of a longer 'lever action' in my view,

Nice lookin' rig you have there, by the way.

Allan

Rick is right. You do not have enough leverage to roll back a bale. It is simple engineering math. You are pivoting around the point where the bale fork mounts on the loader arms. A 1500 pound bale in a horizontal position will have a center of mass approximately 3 feet from the pivot giving you a "Torque" or more properly called a moment of 4500 ft-lbs. A 3" cylinder has an area of 7.07 square inches. If your hydraulic system produces 2200 PSI then the cylinder produces 15550 lbs of force. Divide 15550 by 4500 and you get .289 ft or 3.47 inches for a moment arm. This distance is from the centerline of the cylinder to the pivot as viewed from the side. This will only get you equilibrium. You will need more "leverage" to roll the bale back. Sorry If this got a little too long winded. Used to do this for a living before I came back to the farm. Good luck

John

Looking in the Farmhand loader book. The only models they show with a single tilt cylinder are the mod #2 and the mod. #22. The mod. 22 is the only one of these two listed for the 4020. It says the tilt cylinder is a 3" bore. The loader has a lift capacity of 2800 lbs. The 4020 hyd. pressure should be 2250 psi. You might want to check that.

Here's a picture of the two. The one on the Int. is the model 2 , the one on the Ford is the model 22. Your's should look like the one on the Ford.

Ray,

Have you got a picture of that thing? The smaller Farmhand loaders usually have 5 cylinders.

2 for lift, 2 for tilt and 1 for Grapple. Also, you should have three control levers, I would think.

I've never heard of any big bale ever stopping a Farmhand; they are a fairly rugged loader.

Are you tied to the tractor hydraulics or a separate pump?

Sorry, I just can't see your particular "Farmhand" brand loader in my mind's eye. There should be a model # plate on the front boxed framing.

These are actually the old Dunham brand loaders. They were bought out by Farmhand Division of AGCO. There are lots of the older Dunham loaders around. I have the Dunham model that is now the Farmhand model 22 on a 1650 Oliver. I used to have it mounted on a 4030 Deere. Either one will tilt back a bale rolled with a John Deere 567 baler. All I have is a chained on spear on the front lip of original loader bucket. However, it will just barely tip them back. But, with the dedicated spear or fork, you are losing the length of the bucket. So, I would think it would tilt easily with the dedicated equipment. I agree the leverage is not enough on the pictured set up. Duplicating the cylinder mounting dimensions on the factory bucket would probably fix the problem.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I see what you are talking about. I'll get out the torch this weekend and do a little cutting and welding. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again. Take care.

Hi Doug.

Aw, Ha! That explains it, 'cause it sure didn't look like a Farmhand front mount to me. LOL

Did they buy out the complete Dunham line? The reason I ask is because I used to have a 14 or 15' Dunham packer that was a monster when it came to preparing a field.

I'm gonna have to have another when I get this dirt bought, if I can find one. Maybe AGCO is the place to look?

Thanks for the info,

Allan

I don't know offhand if Agco bought the cultipacker lineup or not. I would check there first though.

Allan,
I'll try to get a picture of it today. There is no ID plate on it. My neighbor has one just like it though and I'll check his model #. The loader is plugged into the remotes on the tractor hydraulics. As per the Post from Rick I would think it might be too heavy too except my neighbor has the same loader and cylinder mounted in the center and it does fine. Thanks for the quick responses.

Hi Rick,

What he is describing sounds like that single cylinder mounted in the upper center for use with a grapple fork. A lot of guys put a bale spear out there in place of the grapple and it works very well; did it myself for quite a number of years.

It sounds like a F227 or F235 front mount, given the fact that he is using the tractor's hydraulics; but he says the center cylinder is longer & mounted to the bucket; that makes it sound like an old F-11.

Either way, that Farmhand should very easily handle a big bale. In fact, it should just "toy" with it.

He certainly has a big enough tractor, but maybe he has hydraulic pressure problems? Who knows?

Dunno, would sure like to see a picture of the loader.

Thanks for the hollar,

Allan

Ok, I took some pictures of this loader with my digital camera, but I don't know how to get them on the site. I'll be glad to post them if you could give me a hand. If I don't get it done tonight it will be Friday before I can do it.
I forgot to mention that several times while using the loader one of the hydraulic hoses kept coming undone on the back of the tractor. I'm not sure if the lock lever is bad or what. I don't think so because I baled alot of hay with it and it never came undone with the balers hydraulic door. Just happened when I used the loader.
George, I think you are right mine is a model 22. Thanks for the pictures. Thanks for all of the advise. I want you all to look at these photos and see if my bracket I welded on the lower center of the loader might be the problem. I don't think it is since it works empty. Thanks again.
Ray.

If this link works. Just follow directions. You can only post one picture at a time. I think !

This spear did not come with the loader that's why I had to make the bracket. Again, it all works good until I get a load on it. Thanks alot for helping me out.

Ray,

Nice job on the bracket. Will have to side with Rick on this one. The location of the pivot is too close to cylinder bracket(same plane). No leverage. That single cylinder set up will work, but at best you will need to relocate that bracket up toward the spear. That probably means relocating the other end of the cylinder as well.

thanks

Randy

Ray; These were not design to lift that much weight simple as that. You don't have the leverage right to do it with that much weight that far forward hanging on it. If you relocate your cylinders it would work. this is common on some of the early loaders. Rick
