I have a bad bearing on the pickup drive end of the plunger arm of a John Deere 14T baler. I removed the slip clutch and have access to the end of the plunger drive arm and bearing, but can't seem to budge the housing that hold the bearing around the shaft from the side of the baler....

Any hints?

After removing the drive, look for a snap ring (BP-13616 E) that retains the bearing (JD 7140). To remove bearing, you will have to remove the bearing housing, fastened with 4 7/16" cap screws.

Remove the 4 bolts and use two small crows foot bars. Insert tips between casing and casting, and pry. Heat from a torch might help. I would try using a pipe wrench or large pliers to turn the casting and then use a drift to knock it loose thru the other side. I have drilled and taped pieces like this to attach a puller or run screws thru to push it off. Good luck; John

Thanks for the help, John!

I ended up doing much as you describe, using some heat, some hammer wacking from the back side, and a puller to get the housing out. The bearing outer race cracked and came apart as the inner race was stuck on the shaft. I used a Dremel with a cutting disk to cut a groove in the inner race, the inner race cracked as I got the groove nearly done. After that the inner race came off with a few hammer taps.

Now to locate a replacement bearing and reassemble everything....

Thanks again!

Grease is cheaper than new bearings. I try to grease my 14T before and after, because it only gets used 3 to 4 times.

I did grease everything, but the bearing that went bad is a sealed one so hopefully the new one I put in will be good for another 40 years....
