gear box oil for JD403 brush hog

Can't find my manual and it's time to mow, but I need to add oil. Is 80-90w OK? Thanks in advance!

Most gearboxes require at least 90 and sometimes 140 for severe applications.

About grease, have used it for years on hogs with worn out seals. Never had a problem.

Full is not full. Should be a pipe plug on the side of the box about half way up from the bottom which is the full mark.

Stick a finger,wire,something,in it to see whats there. If it smells/looks/feels/drips like 80-90,good to go.

Most manufacturers recommend gear oil in the range of 90w. The most important thing though is just to have some oil in the box. I have even stuffed them with grease when the seal went bad and I didnt have time to fix, but I dont recommend that.

OK, I'm ready to go. Found the pipe plug and used 80-90w to that level. Thanks for the info, maybe the manual will show up now that I don't need it.
