I got this mower from my aunt who no longer needed it. The wooden pitman was broken so I ordered a new one from the John Deere dealer. Came in the right length with holes in the right places. I have it installed on the flywheel end but I can't figure out how to work the ball joint connection at the blade end. There is a forked piece that holds the two halves on the blade ball. It is spring loaded and I cannot budge it back to spread the socket halves. I can't believe it's supposed to be this difficult. Have I installed the hardware incorrectly on the wooden piece? Any voices of experience would be very welcome. tia.

Stick a pry bar (about 1/2 in dia on the end, and about 2 feet long)in the end thingy and pry the sucker, rotating the pry bar back towards the pitman rod. Should pop right in. Have the end thingy ready to grab the sickle bar ball in place.

You should get an operators manual and parts book from Deere. The manual will show you all that stuff, and show you just how to adjust everything. The books are not expensive.

Our 9W is about as reliable as death and taxes, unless a rock guard shakes off now and again. You might want to lay in one more pitman rod for the future, since they will let go after a few years of use, storage, use, storage...

Thanks, I'll try again. I tried once with a large screwdriver but got too timid. Ignorance will do that...was afraid of breaking something by trying to do the wrong thing. I'd get a manual but I'm only trying to put the thing together so I can sell it. It won't work on my tractor. It is designed to clamp on the tractor lift arms and mine are too wide to fit in the square u-bolts. So I'm gonna sell it to someone with a smaller tractor (8N or whatever) and get me one that will work better on my Ford 850.

I wonder how much work it would be to fit a sicle bar mower such as this to a Farmall A

Deere made a version of that mower that bolted to a drawbar and had a castor wheel in the back. A neighbor of ours would use a 7 footer behind his Farmall A. Later he went up to his H, and eventually went over to a belly mount on a 2N.

The point is, you can do that, but an A might be a tad short on power in some cases.

We used some 3" angle iron and it worked just fine on our 3000 and 851. Just took a couple of hours to rig. We made our own pitman arms. Be sure to grease the zerk under the cap that lifts off when the unit is raised.

As you please. Mine didn't come with u-bolts, and I don't think the book mentioned Massey 50's. But I got some 5/8 or whatever redi-rod and borrowed a torch at work and bent some up. They've worked fine the 15 years since then.
