NH 845 Twine Tension

I have a used NH 845 chain baler. This thing works great for me. I would like the twine to be tighter on the bale. If I increase the tension, then I can't get the tie to start. I have two questions:
1. Do I really want the twine tighter? The reason I want them tighter is to make a neater bale that holds together better with grass hay and, also the forks that I use to pick them up will grab the strings and tear them off the bale.
2. Is there an aftermarket twine tensioner that will allow the first few wraps at low tension until it gets started, then increases tension the tension for the remainder of the wrap?

Funny, I was just reading my manual on Hesston 5580 rounder and they said just what you experienced about too much tension.

I have found that if you go slower when you bale, giving the belts time to pack the hay tighter, it has more hay to expand upon ejection and subsequently pushes harder against the twine and makes it tight.

The other thing they said is to center start the windrow and then stay on one side, right up against the row till you think you have one side full, then quickly to the other side and bring it up to the same level. Said not to worry about the center as it would take care of it'self.

Will try this method next time I roll. I had been running about 30 sec on one side, then crossing and 30 on the other and on and on. Bales weren't as flat topped as I'd liked. We'll see.

Good Luck,

Mark

If you want tighter bales, you need to work on the bale tension system, not the twine. I am not a wizard on chain balers, but they are not known for extremely tight bales. Some models are better than others. Using forks to support round bales is problematic in terms of twine or net in any case. Use a spear or similar tool to lift and carry bales, keeping the spear away from the twine and edges of the bale.
