Has anyone ever heard of, seen or used a three point mounted fork lift type attachment (except with a bale spear) to load small round bales into a barn or onto a trailer?

Thanks,
Bill

Bill,

I know I'm gonna show my age here, but when you say 'small round bales', do you mean "SMALL" round bales?

If so, a hay basket on a loader works very well. Sweep 'em up lengthwise.

Word of caution. Saw an M.D. relaxing on his farm who lifted a round bale in a bucket (sideways) and lifted it up over the tractor.

The bale rolled out of the bucket, down the lifting arms, and right over him.

I know that they make baskets, but I don't trust them. I spear it. Then don't have to worry.

Was on TV - 911.

Mark,

Hear ya on that one. I would never even consider lifing a big round bale without a grapple fork on a loader.

What I was talking about was those TINY round bales (18" diameter) like folks used to make with those old A/C round balers..... years and years ago.

I believe one brand that may be is Ag-Krane. They cost a bit of money, but seem to do the job. They have many different sizes & setups & devices to mount on their booms.

I just recieved a Fred Cain 3pt like you are talking about. It has a sissors type action with the 3pt linkage, and a bale spear on the back. Due to an extreme (lousy!) weather year so far, have not had chance to properly use it, but appears to work. It will not lift as high as a forklift mast if that is a concern, and requires a pretty heavy tractor.

I know a guy who does just that. Uses a fork type attachment and loads bales onto trailers. Backs the trailer up into ditch. Backs up the tractor onto the trailer. Only catch is that the bale dosen't want to stay where he puts it on the trailer. It tends to slide with him when he pulls away.

Leave the trailer on flat ground and set bale on a$$ end. Then use the second bale to push 1st and so on. Sometimes laying cardboard (like from a washing maching purchase) on the trailer makes it easier to push the bales forward....and yes, the trailer will try to lift the tow vehicle rear wheels off the ground.....but won't.

Had some around here. People complained that when trying to slide under a bale, the fork would frequently snag the twine and break it.

Spear is the weapon of choice.....no twin spears on the front of a front end loader on a big tractor. Then you can see what you're doing when you try to put up rolls.

Vermeer used to make a 6 and a 12 foot model and I believe that Worksaver also made one of these attachments. I know the Vermeer is no longer in production and I believe the Worksaver is also out of production. Check with your local dealer or maybe purchase a forklift with a bad motor and rework the mast. I have seen that done, but it takes a good size tractor, becuase some of those forklift masts are very heavy.
