Replacing chains on JD 14T

I am replacing the main, feeder and knotter drive chains on my newly purchased 14T baler. The main drive chain went fine, but when I made try to install the new feeder drive chain with the same number of links as the old one, same size chain....it won't fit. It seems to be about a quarter inch to short, maybe less than that.

This is on 42.5 links of #60 chain...any hints on installing a new tight roller chain?

Tim-I have an old 14T(1957) and it uses 2050 and 60H chain. Someone replaced some 2050 with 50H and it was always loose, come to find out the chain was good, just had to be 2050.

Upon going thru my parts book, this is what I come up with. Feeder drive (front of mach.) 66 links of #50, made up/w 65 links and 1 master. Feeder (runs crossways in front of knotters) 86 links of #60, made up from 85 links and 1 master. Knotter 22 links #60, made up from 21 links and 1 master

Since you are replacing the chain, it would be good if you could get the spec for the number of links from the Deere partsbook, and start out correct.

The old chain is no doubt stretched between every link, so they cut a link out to tighten it up.

When you say the chain is 42.5 links, do you mean there is actually an offset "half link" installed in the chain?

If there is NO offset link, the way you count roller chain links is to "skip" the FIRST roller on the chain, and start the count with "1" on the SECOND roller, and count up from there.

It's been a while since I worked with my old baler, but it seems to me this chain may have been a "60H" (#60 HEAVY). Does yours use that chain?

Bob, any way you could check and see if your chain is a 60h?

Also, if I provided the serial number could anyone be so kind as to provide me with the specs on the chains until I can get a parts catalog?

I called the John Deere parts fellow at my local dealership and he told me it was 66 links of # 50 chain. My baler has #60 chain and sprockets so that didn't help much....

The old chain says 60 on the side, not 60H so I don't think it is the 60H chain.

The old chain was 42 links with an offset half-link on it.

I thought maybe the previous owner had taken out a link when the chain stretched and put in the half link instead but 43 links of new # 60 chain was to long, so that wouldn't work.

I got the chain on last night by heating it on my gas grill for a few minutes....lol.

I know it will stretch a bit once I start using the baler, but for now it is on awfully tight.

Is this the chain from the top drive shaft that drives the packing fingers, the one on the lhs (facing the baler) that runs the pick-up reel from the cross drive shaft with a bevel gear from the knotters or another? My book does show any chain that's 42.5 links. The old chain is stretched and therefore you'll need to adjust the idler/tensioner gear. HTH

Did you mean it does show a chain of that length or doesn't show a chain of that length?


The chain has an offset link on it which is where I get the .5 for the 42.5 links on the chain.

This is the chain that drives the feeder arms that feed the hay into the hay chamber.

Yeah, I meant "does NOT...". Late nite typo! |:)| I assume you have the operator's and/or parts manuals. The bevel gears on the output side of the packing fingers (under a half round shield) also have timing marks that should be checked. There's an optional set of those gears that allows for timing adjustment - they're shown in the operator's manual.

I have ordered the owner's manual, am still trying to decide if I need the parts catalog.

Thanks for the tip on the timing marks, I will look for those tonight.

Any hints as to what the marks look like or where they are located on the gears?

Standard gears will each have an arrow on the back of the gears, one on a tooth, the other on the mating cog. They should align with one another to be in time. This is most likely the set up you have. The optional set up will have two bolts thru the output gear which allows it to be adjusted without removing the drive chain. HTH.
