I have a ford 5640 was wondering how the difference between HP of a diskbine & a haybine 488 to run off this tractor ??

We mow with a kuhn fc250 and most of the time we run it with our JD. 2030 60HP up hill and down in first gear high range.... just keep the knifes sharp. I like our 2030 on the mower better than our 2755.... I will say that the 2755 will pull it at 10 mph in the fields on first cut.....

your 5640 should run the 488 with now problem as for diskbine questionable they say the new idea 5209 is a very easy turning diskbine a few around run them with ford 5000s a guy up the road has a kuhn fc300 and ive seen him run it with ford 4630 when the john deere 4010 was broke down which is every other day

My neighbor has a JD discbine 9 or 10 foot cut with the flail type conditioners. His Case 1070 (100 HP) broke down so he borrowed a 1600 Oliver(58 HP) from another neighbor. He had to raise the haybine up to start it and could only cut in 1st or 2nd gear. He killed the engine going up hill a couple of times and had to back up and go down to first and take another run at it.
Needless to say he was glad when his Case was fixed.

The other folks are right on the money. Even with a straight disc mower (no conditioner) they are hp hogs in heavy hay. By far and away, my 8' disc mowers use more fuel per hour than anything else I have on the farm (that includes a 15' batwing and a round baler). I can cut with a 60+ hp 5600 but like to cut with 86 hp a lot better. Had a 105 hp tractor for a while, it was too big, made for expenisve and bizzare breakdowns.

I agree with Tim. Disc Mo/Co's like power.. need to keep the blade tip speed up. with enought HP you can mow anything as fast as you want (within reason) If you're doing alfalfa you may want to ask around as some models (many I think) will leave streaks (blades blow down the hay) grass no problem. some pro-hay guys out west (Calf) were still using sicle-bars about 8 years ago just because of the streak issues. good luck

Most 9' disc mower conditioners want between 70 and 90 HP, more in tough conditions. A 488 sickle haybine can be run in most conditions by 35-40 HP.
