Anybody have any experience with a Ford 530 square baler? I am looking at one that is in very decent shape, used little each year since purchased new, always shedded, never abused. Haven't a clue what it might be worth. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks - Jerry

Jerry, The 530 is a fine baler that works great with smaller HP tractors. I bale all I want with a Ford 2000 and it handles it fine. The baler is based on the exact same knotters that NH and JD use and are adjusted very much the same. With that being said, I doubt you can find a Ford baler specialist in your area so figure you are going to have to do any repairs yourself or at least know how to do them. Most parts are available but with the last NH merger with Case I am anticipating that Ford parts are going to get alot less attention. Because of this, I would not recommend spending that much on this baler. In my part of the country a Ford baler is not that uncommon. I saw a cream puff 532 (same basic baler just a newer model) sell for $1600 but it went to a guy that had 2 of them already and was looking to use his current baler as the backup. They make a nice shaped bale and will pack it as full as any other baler. I like the balers but you should purchase it with your eyes open. Too much and you could have purchased a comparable NH or JD that will have less of an issue at some point in the future regarding parts. If cheap enough then grab the baler and start looking for a parts baler. If you get the baler we can help you with most issues to get resolution.... Email is unblocked if you want...

Thank you both for all of the information. As you noted, this baler was set up the wrong way. Can anyone supply me with the correct set-up? I am very familiar with JD knotters, so hope that the Ford knotters will not be an issue for me. I offered him $400 for it, but he countered with $250, stating that he knew that I was a "Ford man" and a good neighbor, and was not wanting to "get the better of me". I offered to mow his field until the farm sells, so I think it was a good deal struck.
Thanks again for the info!
Jerry

Jerry,

As with any baler owning a manual is the most important thing. Your neighbor is not going to believe how much more hay this thing will eat when you fix it. I have unblocked my email. Send me a note and go to eBay and get a manual. I am out of town right now but can get a scan of the setup proceedure when I get home later this weekend. Send me a note and Welcome to the FBBA. You did good

I bought one 3 years ago at an auction that appeared to be in very good condition for $500. It turned out that the knotters required a good deal of parts and work but it has turned into a good baler. I baled 650 bales last month without a missed tie. Jim's mention of the dealer set up problem is in regards to the feed forks. The forks should be working opposite of each other, when 1 set is down feeding the other set is up preparing to feed. Some of these balers were set up so that both forks fed the bale chamber at the same time and caused the baler to choke up in heavy hay. It is a relatively simple fix to change the set up so don't let that stop you, in fact, if you found one like that it might not have been used very hard. At any rate, there is a whole band of Ford Brand Baler owners on this site that can provide you with support if it is needed.

Jerry Dishman (Jerry D from NC) is the guy you want to talk to. As far as market value, the blue Ford baler can usually be bought pretty cheap. My 542 was free. After about $300 in bearings, it's baling hay!

Jerry knows the details, but there was a factory manual issued that gave bad instructions on setting up the 530 baler. As a result a lot of them left the dealer not baling very well. From that they got a bad reputation. Hang on for awhile and Jerry D will help you out.
