I am looking for a round baler to make hay on @ 35 acres and maybe a little custom baling. I am looking for a baler under $2500. I am looking for ideas and opinions/suggestions on which baler will give me dependability, ease of operation, etc. Some have steered me away from the vermeer 605c because of it being stubborn about starting a bale and being closed throat. I have a 75hp and 50hp tractor if this helps. I am not trying to start a brand war, just looking for some help.

Kent,
We have a 504F on our farm, bought it used probably 25 years ago. Just this year rebuilt the clutches in it. Also rebuilt the pickup with new bearings ect. First time we ever had to have the baler torn completly down. Bearings on drive rollers seem to be the biggest problem. Have caught the baler on fire a couple of times. Baler does NOT like damp hay at all. You could call it a feature if your creative, cant bale hay that wont store.
I like 504 F over the 605 F if hauling bales any distance, they are a narrower bale and stack better on a wagon, I believe they are 4x5, vs 5x6 for the 605.

Given the same condition the 504F or 504G are worth $1,000 more than a 605F or 605G of the same model.
If the F,G,& H balers are having hard start problems or problems with damp hay then the baler is out of adjustment. The flappers are worn out if you can see the cords in the rubber. Check to see if all the teeth are installed and the clearance between the flappers and the teeth needs to be 1/8". The pickup cam should be adjusted for wear. The belts need to be adjusted all to the same length. Once you have all this done, the baler should bale as if it was new.

The Manual for my Super F calls for 1 to 3 inches between the teeth and the starting roller. Am I adjusting something wrong? I keep up replacing teeth and have the belts all the same length but still ocasionally have trouble starting bales. Vermeer Distributer tells me the teeth should be between the two bolts on the bands when they drop down. I installed genuine Vermeer rubber mounted teeth, rather than the "will fit"s this spring. I was told they are stiffer and will improve the situation. Cut our first hay yesterday(Central Manitoba). I guess I'll see soon how well the new teeth work.

Thanks for the ideas. I found a 605F here in southern Illinois and he wants $4500. I have not looked at it yet but it is more than I can justify spending for just 35 acres. Is there other brands I should be looking for also?? Thanks, Kent

The F was the first really good baler with open throat, no bottom belt, & hyd pressure.

Any other brand will be a generation newer to have those features, & cost more. Anyhow, in general, in my experience.

The dealer was asking $3500 for my 605F, I bought it at his bankruptsy auction for $1600.

605F or G should be available in that $$$ range.

I can't vouch for any other brands but we have had very good luck with Vermeer 605F's. We put up over 2000 bales a year with a Super F and have a F as a backup. You can expect some minor problems with bearings over time. The 4 bar pickup on a F gives us trouble starting bales in certain types of native hay, but the 6 bar on a Super F has much less trouble. These balers can't compare capacity wise to newer balers but should get the job done.

Good luck

John

A 605F would be a much better start, & can be had for your budget,

Most other balers worth owning will be above your budget. At least, around here. Dealers ask $3-3500 for a 605F, but farm sales will get you $1500 - 2500 if you are a shopper.
