For small square twine tie balers please list the New Holland models you like best. Decending order of all you know about is fine, also your thoughts on any models to avoid. I'm in the market for a back up to my old Model 80 wire tie and need a reference before I start. Thanks Dick Davis

I think you were asking for a listing in priority order. Can't help there, just not enough experience. I had a Oliver baler, then bought another for parts. Ended up using the parts baler. Both were junk. Moved to a Case 200 that "only misses one in a hundred". What he actually must have meant was it only "baled one in a hundred". Now I have a NH 315. It's great. Missed one bale so far this year and have done about 1500.

I own a 273 and I'm happy with it. The down falls are a lower capacity and a narrow pickup but it makes consistant bales and I never have problems when it's set up right. Neighbor has a 300 series NH and he bales more than me without problems. I guess any baler that is shedded and well maintained will do you good.

If you want to make a heavy bale, I would go with a 426. It is a 16x18 baler. Will make all they way up to 70 lb. bales of straw. Very high capacity and very dependable.

I've only been around the NH 270, it's been on this place for 40 years or so, dad bought it slightly used.

It's made 2-6,000 bales a year, every year, for all those years, & have not put much of any parts into it. Couple springs, a chain. Several 100 shear pins. ;) Makes good bales. Rarely misses a knot unless it's too wet to bale or a twine ball change. I think it's all about keeping them greased, and indoors unless it's baling.

The negatives is that it's a lower capacity machine (bales about as fast as you would want to stack a rack behind the baler....) and it crowds the windrow a lot - right side tractor tire will run on the hay if you have a larger tractor. Has a narrow pickup with wider teeth spacings.

I wouldn't mind faster, & a better pickup, but I could never expect a more dependable machine. Replaced a spring on the knotter assembly ~10 years ago, haven't touched them other than greasing.

I think you have given proof that a properly adjusted old baler is better than an outofwhack new baler.

Around here the New Hollands baled a lot of hay. I have owned a 269 and a 270 I liked the 270 better. Right now I own a International baler, simply because I was offered more than my two New Hollands were worth and my daughter's father in law had this one for sale.

my first baler i had was a super78. I spent more time replacing shear bolts than i did baling. It also would misbale about every second or third bale. Bought me an IH 430 and the first time i baled it missed one tie in the whole season. Now the NH is my backup and i hope i dont need it

277
276
276
are tough to beat for a back up baler they are pretty durable machines, just not pretty to look at and not having a high capacity makes them kinda slow, but they bale
MY OPINION
stay away from the 300 series, all the aluminum inside the tine bar area might look nice but it is expensive when it comes loose throws it into the chamber and plunger takes it out along with every thing else thats in its way
happened to a competitor of mine(he was hot)
he could bale a lot faster than me but at the end of the day he was all greasy and not finished and my 277 at the time was going home

After 2 MF's, I got a NH 66 at auction for $120. It had been stored outside for several years, but the price was right. Had trouble with it knotting, cleaned, adjusted but no luck. Finally I bought new twine, even though the bundles in there were pretty full. With the new twine, it rarely misses a knot. Maybe it is sensitive to twine, I don't know, but I would recommend it as a possible--it puts the 2 MF's I had to shame.

273,68,66. The 273 is the best I ever owned. Only missed a half dozen bales per season max. And that was because of hand knots between balls getting caught in the knotter. Wish I still had it. A beautiful machine.

I have to agree on the 273. That was the first baler I ever baled with and it is still on the farm. Only knots that have been missed were hand tied. As with any baler of its vintage it wont take much speed, but with a heavy windrow you can put out a couple thousand bales in a day. For the money, consistancy, reliability, and age, I don't think it can be beat.
