NH 68 Baler- Needles won't return to home position

I have a NH S68 Baler. I timed the baler, the needles enter the chamber and when coming out they don't return completely to the home position allowing the safety latch to pull back. The plunger hits the safety latch causing the baler to shear bolts on the fly wheel. Does anyone know what is causing this? Thanks!

I've had a NH 67, 68, and 69 baler, and everyone has needed the knotter chain advanced a link or three to avoid that problem. I don't know if the chains stretch, or what, but advance them a link at a time until the problem goes away. I also found it knots more consistanly.

I have a NH S67 baler that I had the same problem last year. I timed it with the marks 4 times and broke the shear bolts each time then with the help of others here I had to advance the timing two links and that fixed the problem. I told the neighbor about how I fixed my baler and later he broke a chain and his was doing the same thing but this time we had to move the timing back three links. With the older balers the timing marks are just a place to start. Hope this helps Jeff

My 68 was starting to do that again.
When you say advanced. Witch way is that. If you are looking at the 2 marks lined up from the rear.
Is advanced up or down from the other mark?

When I advanced it looking at the marks I moved it toward the front of the baler. Kelly C are you the one from Braham MN that was at the auction south of Ogilvie last year? We talked about this site. Hope it helps Jeff

Jeff, Are you referring to the main drive chain controlling the plunger and tines or the chain that controls the knotter and needles etc. When my baler broke down I broke the main drive chain and had to repair. Thanks!

When the neighbors chain broke it was the main one for the plunger but the whole baler was out of time. When my s67 was breaking shear bolts it was just the knotter chain I had to work on. Hope this helps Jeff

There is a threaded rod next to the knotter brake. You can adjust this to take the needles farther out. Also you may need to adjust the chain forward or back a half link on the sprocket to slightly adjust the timing. Take the hay out and get someone to turn the baler over by hand while you watch until you can get it right
