Ok after stacking- Unstacking and restacking a bunch of hay this year so far.
I am really thinking about bale baskets again.
Can you tow them with a pick up loaded?

Hello Kelly

I do about 5000 bales a year and use two bale baskets. All my hay is for horses. Half of the hay stays on our farm and half goes to other customers. My customers really like the baskets and come and get the baskets with their pick ups. Here are several benefits of baskets.

1 They are easy to back up so I don't worry about letting customers take them home

2 They do not need to be unloaded so the customer can return the basket quickly. This is the most important advantage and why I only need two baskets. Just pull the handle and go, no pulling, tugging or wrestling of bales out of the thower rack.

3 No thrower to aim or adjust or maintain.

4 Less horsepower required.

I started out with one basket and soon got a second. I hope this helps.

Kelly; I pulled them behind pickup 15miles for ten seasons. I had 1800.00 in all three of mine and sold them for 1200each 10 years later. I got along fine with them. The New Holland bale wagons are fine as long as you have big sheds to unload them.

For the cost of a set of 3 you could get a good 1049S NH bale wagon, self propelled, with gas engine. For a little more than the price of 1 you could get a good pull type 1033/34.

Any good used 1034 sells for $4000 here, bale baskets are $1800 new. I stayed with a bale thrower when I traded my JD baler on my Hesston baler because I already had 5 good wagons.

I think you slipped a few digits on the price of a new bale basket, was $3200 about 5 years ago when I was looking. Used go $1500 - 2300. I've heard of people getting them for $600, but not for the 5 years I actively looked....

The problem with the NH bale stackers is they are kinda fussy, bales need to be uniform, and for quick unloading you need a big flat shed.

Throwers & racks are king of small squares around here (southern MN) and a whole lot of the NH stackers are also used. Baskets are rare, but I see more now than I did 10 years ago.

Dealers here get $3800 for an EZ Trail, best price I was able to find was $3000 and that was before steel went up (and they lost an ungodly lawsuit on a manufactoring defect in the latch mechanism; $385K; last thing I need is to be sued again). At $1800 they would definitely be worth considering.

Sorry, $2800 each, from the factory. Agri-Link I think was the name, built in Pennsylvania.

Kelly, I don't understand why you didn't keep the thrower on the 268? And add sides to your current hay wagons..... ..... I ain't going to lie, I love ours!

Them bale baskets are just too wide for our roads and lanes in this area..... ....At our one farm it would take a D6 to make the lane wide enough to use them.

Width is not my problem, but I could take out a lot of electricity on the place if i don't keep thinking. The basket is 11' or a bit more high, & hay piles above that for a couple feet....
