What size engine to put on baler?

I have aq 49 Farmall M w/o live power and use a IH #27 baler. The problem I have is too much grass hay in a windrow to be able to drive in first gear and bale. I must repeatedly quickly slip it out of gear and keep the baler going. Makes for a long day. The windrows are not double raked, I use a JD #5 mower with a 7 foot sickle bar. The windrows are just that heavy. I would like to put a Wisconsin engine on it, but don't know what size would work the best.

Any help appreciated.

I would go the route we went. Get a different baler. We picked-up a IHC 430 for $275 at an auction. It gobbles the hay, makes real good bales and doesn't miss a tie. Our #27 is worn-out, but the capacity is so limited. I ran the 430 with the H and it did not have any problem in 3rd gear and only had to kick it out of gear twice. I am sure the hay wasn't has thick as yours, we usually use a MF #471 to power the baler. Save time and fuel and look for a pto driven baler, even if you have to wait for the fall/winter. I would say it would be worth it. I hope we never have to use the #27 again!
Take care.

I'm selling the complete engine "kit" off of my 14T John Deere. I just don't feel like dealing with it and I have several tractors with LPTO anyways. Mine is a Wisconsin TFD, 17 HP and I have the book for the engine too. It runs good but I can't keep the stupid belt tight.

Bob, A friend of mine had an old New Holland baler that could be run with PTO or a power unit. It came equipped from factory with a 2-cylinder Wisconsin gas engine, I think about 18 HP. I don't remember the model #, but I have one (pretty rough shape), and it came off a New Holland. I could check the next time I am at the shop for the model # and get back to you, if you would like. I also know that Ford made a Dearborn baler that used a 4-cylinder Wisconsin (it was a VF4D, I'm sure - 30HP). I have one of those balers I've owned for about 5 years, just never have brought it home yet (I have more junk than time). But, the Dearborn was a lot bigger than the New Holland, so I guess they needed more power. Hope this helps, and good luck. Keep us posted.
