Over the last sveral summers I have broken 2 or 3 pitman arms per summer. I am getting ready to do some more mowing this summer and need to know what to do to prevent this problem. I assume that it has to do with slop in the cutter bar that is causing interference. However it could be hitting something in the field. I have replaced the gurds as they have broken or been too worn. Any suggestions on this old mower. It is a rear mount, manual lift, 6 foot bar, it also has a break away in case I hit anything solid.

Unless there is visible major play in your gearbox output shaft, I would guess that your cutterbar inner shoe tracks are worn out.
