In western Washington, where grass tends to be rank (and down, by the time you cut it), I haven't seen anything else used in years. Got my first one in 1974. Disc is better than drum, and all flat discs are better than the type with the outer and inner discs with raised centers. The raised centers are supposed to better define the swath, but end up just wrapping up grass if the grass is "down". Most everybody here runs without a swath board at the end of the bar- so you can make turns at the end of the row without picking the unit up. It makes it a little difficult to see what's cut and what isn't, but if you stray a little, it doesn't matter- the discs cut right through it. You'll leave a little grass uncut at the corners, but just cut it diagonally after you're done with the field (let's see you do that with your sickle bar!) I've always used Taarup brand, and am well satisfied with it.

Those disc mowers are selling like hot cakes right now in southwest Iowa, with all of the rain we have had the hay is very heavy and tough. Seems like the disc mower is the only thing that will handle it.

British farmers been using them since 1970's and you hardly ever see a sickle bar mower in use these days.
Enough said!

Havent cut anything but soybeans since 1995 with anything else. Got our first one in 1988 and ran it and a sickle NH haybine. Went to a pair in 1991. Retired the haybine in '95, just keep it to cut beans. So far were on #3 & #6, both NI 5408's. #3 outlasted a new BH GHM 800 (#5) and a used JD 1326 (#4).
