I'm having trouble with a IH 241 belts slipping. Can any on tell me the proper length for the belts. In the archives someone said the belts were supposed to be 424 inches. I measured mine and they are 407 a big difference. Did the build differet sizes of 241? Any help would be appreciated. Bill

I just got through doing 50 bales with one .The belt length is critical as well as being all same size. I have more than one splice in my belts.Windrow size is important for starting the bale as that seems to be the biggest problem with the baler as well as bearing problems.

OK - I have called both IH delaers and baler belt supply places and I think more than one has gave me this number - they say for the 241 the belts are supposed to be 430" long - mine are way short - like 3' or so - i am working on trying to fix that next - the problem with belts too short is there needs to be enough slack in order to get a big enough wad of hay in the chamber so that when the belts get tight enough to start spinning - the hay has enough size to it it is already in a barrel shape and ready to start spinning - with my short belts right now i have a very tough getting bales to start - basically start them all by hand (don't ask)
next topic - having belts a little short isn't probably the worst thing _BUT they really should all be uniform length - think about it - if you have 8 blets one length and 1 belt that is a couple inches shorter - that will be the only tight one - the rest will all want to slip - make sure all the belts are about the same is very important - i did do that to mine so far
next topic - some of the later models (the 2400 maybe even a few later 241's have a rubber roller that helps drive the belts - the rubber on rubber contact gives better traction thatn a steel roller trying to drive a rubber belt - that said - mine is steel - i don't really have any belt slipping problem - in fact that is the least of my many problems - but one thing i am going to do is get some spray on pickup bedliner and coat that steel roll that drives the belts - that should give it better traction - don't know how long that stuff will last (i only make about 30 bales a year)
next topic - my belts are eseentially very smooth (aka SHOT) but i can't be buying new ones for my crops..... obviously the more tread on the belts the better the grip on the steel rollers would be - so what i am doing to help this issue is this:
I have bought ($20 for 35 footer) some old John Deere round baler belts that people are taking off and throwing away (i have gotten a couple free ones also) i examine the sides - run them through an ordinary wood bandsaw - and cut the worn down edges off (JD uses like 7 or 8" wide belts) and make me a brand new 4.5" wide belt that has great tread - JD belts have like chevron tread - then i put new ends on and match the length to the rest of my belts and am good to go - I have to lengthen all my belts as my next project ...

keep us posted on how it goes...
