I bought some land last fall, and without checking planted some alfalfa/timothy on it this spring. Some of my alfalfa is turning yellow and or turning purple/maroon on the leaves. Obviously this isn't good. Later I found out that atrazine was used on the land last year. Could this be some residual? Or do I have another problem?

Leafhoppers turn alfalfa brown. It looks like it is dying.Risidual atrazine will kill it.Yours is a nourishment problem.Get the tissue test done to find out what you need.

not enough boron will cause leaves to be yellow
not enough sulpher will cause leaves to be blue or purple. You can take a plant to your ag office and have a tissue test done to tell you what nutrients are lacking. Did you do a soil test before you planted?

Also, did you apply any lime? If so, raising the pH can cause the atrazine to become "unbound" where it can become more active and cause problems. If you can, find out what rate of Atrazine was applied. I think atrazine tends to linger longer in heavier soils that get little rain/snowfall.

Do you see any of those derned little leafhoppers in there? Their feeding habits can change the alfalfa plant color.
