JD 37 Sickle Mower Question

I just got a JD 37 sickle mower. The frame/etc is in good condition, but the pitman drive sheave/flywheel has a broken portion about 2" long around the edge, and the crank pin was welded back on. Is this a typical failure with these mowers? Since the mower has no slip-clutch on the upper drive sheave (from PTO) like some IH mowers I've seen, or any kind of shear pin, how do you keep from damaging the sickle or the pitman or the crank pin if a solid object gets in the sickle? Does the belt slipping usually prevent damage?

Does the JD 450 mower have a slip clutch or shear pin?

Thanks.

I have a JD 38 sickle mower with the same flywheel and belt. The belt slips when the sickle becomes stuck. I have had rocks stuck in the sickle with no damage. The best thing I did was to get a manual from e-bay for $5.00 and that showed me a lot of tricks. Good luck and if you have trouble I try and help with the manual Jeff
