New Holland 40 silo blower

We've got a NH 40 Whirl-A-Feed blower that just started making a bad slamming noise in the area of what I would call the "turntable" when feeding it heavy wet haylage. The NH dealer thinks that the splines are worn, allowing the "turntable" to hit the floor of the hopper. He said the fix is to put a large flat washer underneath the turntable. To me, the noise almost sounds like a slip-clutch. Does anyone have any thoughts on this problem?

Yes Jim, this is fairly common, but the advice you were given is bad!! The whirl-a-feed sits on a taper spline, so the washer is a bad idea. Basicly, your splines are worn and it takes a new shaft and center hub. However, I have shimmed those splines, but if I told you how, you would never believe me. Steve

I don't know about your 40, but I had a 27 for over 20 years. The bearing or spline could be bad, as well as wear in the pinion drive gears. There is no slip clutch on a 27- slippage is accomplished by the spinner drive belt. Check the paddles on the spinner for adjustment to the outer housing. Too much gap allows haylage to get stuck when it goes around, rather than into the blower itself. Your problem might simply be the high moisture of the haylage- it is tougher to blow. When I jacked the silo to 90 feet, the blower simply could not get it that high. I bought an IH 600 and that worked great. Most current blowers I see now are copycats of that one. NH made a smaller diameter, 1000rpm (#30 I think) that was a joke. Stay with a large diameter, 540 rpm- it takes torque, not speed, to push haylage up a pipe.

If the turntable is hitting the bottom there would be marks where it hits. It could also be a bering on the turntable shaft. I have a 40 blower and have not encountered any problems like this.
