The local Case dealer has an almost brand new Gehl 9 ft discbine(model 2345) for sale. Mower is beautiful and the price is $2950. Sounds pretty reasonable for a mower that is almost perfect condition. The manual says it requires 65 hp. We have a 656 rated at 65 hp. Think this is a big enough tractor for it? We currently have an old N.I cutditioner that uses flails, and I havent ever used a disk mower. Any input is welcome.

Mike, You would be just find power wise. I also run a NI cut conditioner and there is nothing that sucks up more power than it does.

You'll have all you want in heavy hay. we've had discmowers since the late 80's. Have run an 8' with everything from 52-105 hp. My dad uses a 5600 Ford (62 hp) and I use 76/77 series Fords (86 hp). To me, 86 hp is perfect for a disc mower. When I used 105 hp I warped shafts, burned belts, lots of bad stuff; gutted a mower. With the 62 hp, it really pulls the tractor hard in good hay, some down shifting.

The price is a steal, if everything is ok with it. Be glad I'm not closer :-).

Regards,
David

Well I went down to the Case dealer with cash today to buy the diskbine. When I got there the the salesman said "oh we made a mistake in the ad, we want $12,950, not $2,950." The old saying if it sounds too good to be true it probably is..."

Hi, I have a JD 925 10 ft discbine that I am running with a 52HP MF 165D. Most brands are looking for 65 to 85 HP. The more HP you have the faster you can run. Hills and wet hay will slow you down with HP on the low end. Bill

Your 656 has mor torque and Cubic inches than most tractors it's size. I'd say you will be fine. The cutditioner pull harder than most mowers it's size, I think you will be fine.

I have a farmall 400 that has been rated at 60 horses on the dyno at the PTO. I was told that is not near enough for a discbine because they take a minimum of 100 horses?

Depends on the machine you're going to pull, what you're cutting with it, and how fast you want to go. New Idea 5209 9' I believe is advertized at 65 HP minimum, New Holland wants 80 minimum on the 1411. If you can find a used one, New Holland made a 408 8' cut that 60 HP could run. AGCO is now advertizing disc machines down to 7' under the MF name that supposedly are made for smaller HP. I don't know if the smaller ones have conditioners on them though, as I haven't really checked them out yet.
