There seems to be alot of people with the same problem this spring , rain every two to three days, not enough time to get any hay put up. So you know what we did, started painting equipment, so far the tractor is done , the bale accumalator, oh yeah and don't forget the baler.Stuff sure looks pretty now, people think I got a new tractor, amazing what a face lift can do. Good luck to everybody putting up hay, I just got started this week.

Get you a CCM drum mower and mow when it is raining and bale hay when the sun is shinning.

Are you admitting to rained on hay? I could do what you are doing instead of wait wait wait but I have picky customers and I don't know if they would accept it not pretty green and sweet hay smelling.

IF you wait until you hay is over ripe the green color will be gone. Mow it early before it's ripe to maximize the green color.

Sounds like Hay Dr. deals mostly with cattle people. I've had hay that has gotten wet, and lost its color, but horses will still eat it no problem (I do have that rare customer who will take this type of hay for her horses). But most horse owners in this state, they pretend to know everything about hay and how to make it (they think hay farmers are stupid, you know, so they must "educate" us on how to do it right) They want green as astroturf (but dry as desert sand) with that "fresh mowed smell". Once they have their mind made up as to what they think they need, there's no convincing them otherwise.

I totally agree with that. Course I have one customer that doesn't care as I deliver it to her for $1.50. Had I round baled it for cows I would have only made the equivalent of about .85 per bale and I am preserving a customer. When things get better she will get better hay (next year?) and I will get a better price.

Besides, my cows seem to like sudan. Put a raunchey sudan bale out with a nice coastal bale and they will hit the sudan every time. If the sudan is fresh, they will stay on it till it's gone..... course they have to fall down in front of it as they are too stuffed to walk away. LOL.

Found out that a good spin the the tall grass while raining is a good way to clean last winters mud off the tractor. followed it up with a can of gunk and a good hosein and it looks almost new again. 53 model. The 64 looks a little worse for wear after bushhogin the wet grass thou. Got another 1 1/2" today- looks like alot of good hay is going to waste again this year. BTW the couch did imprison me for about 3 hours today. Just something about a tin roof, cool weather and taking a nap that I can't get away from. Don't be to quick a scratchin up all that fresh paint now.
