With all the rain and crappy weather here I have been sneekin out and mowing just before the rain and takin advantage of two or three days of dry afterwards to get the hay done. Well last night I was out cutting (rain Friday, dry Sat, Sun, Mon, rain Tues) with plans to bale Sun or Mon. Bout 2/3 way through 10a of grass/clover I dug up one hell of a rock (close to bolder status). And I mean dug up. Most all of it was under ground. Just about broke my leg steppin in the hole left behind (up to my knee). This field is/was in real nice shape. Most all the rocks were, or have been picked up over the last few years. No trash, or crap to fight with. In fact the only other rock found last night was about softball sized. Pretty rare given 3-4" rocks seem to grow like weeds around here. But since it was dark, and I had to get done before the rain came, I was runnin as fast as I could go. Then it happened - BAM - Tractor jerks and the 1209 jumped up. I thought I had broke the mower in half. Engaging mower drags tractor down and sickle won't move. Crap! Get down and start digin out cutter bar. In the end I was happy to find it only bent two guards, and no knife damage. Now I know what those moster springs are for. They saved my ar$$. 10 mins and I was on my way, just a little slower, and adjusted one of the lights to see better in front of the mower.

Glad to see or hear that someone is getting some hay work done, this wet pattern we are in in north central Texas is killing me. We have rain in the forcast for the next 7 or 8 days! Baled some this past week that had been rained on, owner called me that afternoon, after it had rained on it that morning and said it was dry, his place is pretty hilly so it does dry out fast. Raked it up, waited about an hour and started baling while my help raked the next field, rolled 9 rolls ok, locked down on the next 2, dumped em out, shut down for the night, went back the next day, baled everything else pretty good. Those 2 that locked her down were so hot you could'nt hold your hands on them. It was not my choice to start on this but you have to try to make the customer happy. Everything turned out ok on everything and the only thing we broke was a chain on the baler that was getting wore anyhow.
I appreciate the fact we are getting some rain here but sure would like to see some of it in August and July. Its getting backed up here big time on work loads.

Been There!!!! My wife was cutting hay with the IH 990 conditioner and a 210 allis(125 hp) at about 6 mph(too fast) in the near dark and hit a stump that I forgot to tell her about. She did'nt get it stopped till it had reared the front of the tractor a few feet off the ground,needless to say there was'nt much left of the 990 mower conditioner. It was real hard to get her on a tractor again.

A few years back I was cutting marsh hay to chop for bedding with our Ford 535 haybine. I went down a waterway & on the way back up, something caught and ripped the whole frame in half, right between the gears and the head. I was a nervous wreck heading home w/out the haybine to tell my dad what happened.

I was mowing on a cousins place field I had never been in before, had been told there was a stump, couldin't find it. Ask Paul who was mowing in next field he said mowed it tree times last year didn't see any stump. Got back on 400D, N H 479 next round guard hit stump head on killed 400 bent axle on 479 finished mowind couldn't get out gate. Wehad to take axle out take it to a press at Cat dealer to straighten it.

Reminds me of plowing with the JD "B"'s..go as fast as you can go, and then BAM, the clutch handle tears your leg off...!!!! ( Feels like it at the time)..!!! Learned to Hate those rocks....!!! And keep my leg over the side of the seat...!!!
