Hey guys,
Are any of you familiar with the Massey Ferguson #12 sqare baler. That's the only number I could find on it so I guess it's the model number. I looked at one that looked to be in very good shape with a new knotter mechanism. The paint was very faded but other than that looked good. Are these any good? What years were they produced and last what would one be worth in good shape. Thanks in advance.
Ray

Been Running a #12 for a couple of years.... Considering that I brought it home from a scrap yard, wopping cost of $15.00 in gas, gave it some TLC, knotter brake, fly-wheel clutch (100.00 in parts) it's been running like a top !

In over 4000 bales, it's miss-tied 2..... :)

Not bad for a machine that was built in 1960, and has NOT had much done to it.

I have had the best of luck with my MF 12. The thing will not miss a tie and has been dependable for the last four years.

The MF 12 and 124 Models were produced in the mid-60's through the early 70's. Parts and manuals are still available.

Current value for a working MF 12 is $400.00-600.00 (usually the paint is faded and surface rust is present) The price can be a bit higher for good cosmetic appearance.

From experience I would have to rate the bale formation, that is its shape and consistancy, as just average. This is adequate for my needs. The "rule" seems to be... The heavier the bale the better the shape.

Light windrows will be a problem for keeping bale density and shape, since the MF 12 likes a consistant windrow that fills the pick-up head at all times and keeps the packer forks laboring, but not over-worked.

Finally, the MF 12 was made back when engineers designed complicated mechanisms to do the job correctly AND last for years. Today, you can't find repair personnel to service these machines. So, if anything major goes wrong, be prepared to tow your baler to the scrap yard. However, at 2900 lbs and with the Chineese paying high prices for scrap steel, what have you got to loose Ray?

They are an exellent baler. We have been runnning ours for about 20 years now, and it never misses a beat. It can really pack a solid bale too. Even an old neighbor who owned EVERYTHING IH had a #12 baler. They rarely break shearbotls in normal conditions, and even in heavy conditions breaks are few and far between. Most older balers(NH & JD) can go for up to $900 at local auctions, I'd say $4-500 for the Massey. Don't know what years they were made, but would guess the same era as our 165, as well as maybe the early 200 series. Ours has square decals on it, I've seen others with round decals.
