fertilizer for 2nd crop hay.

should i fretilize for 2nd crop i want half of yeld i will get from first cutting? if not alittle more. should i put on right after taking first cuttin
(with in couple weeks) or wait till 3 weeks befor wanting to cut 2nd? live in northern ohio valley thanks

If you are going to fertilize your hay ground, it should be done as soon as the previous crop is off, since the next crop is already growing, and you don't need to run that crop down with wheel tracks. Years ago I would apply the years recommended needs in the spring, later I would split the application spring/after first cutting- to split the cashflow expense. Your fertilizer program should depend on soil tests, as well as your current crop. Other respondents talk about fertilizing with nitrogen (urea). In my area, we fertilize alfalfa with potash to enhance yields. Nitrogen is usually associated with growth (height of the crop vs root strength, nutrient content, etc.). There is no one rule that is applicable to everyone. Local conditions dictate local treatments and response. When you say hay, what type of hay are you talking about? Each type of hay might have a different nutrient need.

for me I put on urea 150# to the acre as soon after 1st cutting that they call for some rain.
but I'm probaby wrong.

Might want to go to Page 2 and look half way into the post "Liquid Fertilizer". kyhayman answers my (txblu) question about top dressing. Seems he got scientific on us and read the book. Book says you (joe) are wasting your money.....Urea needs to be covered. 34-0-0 doesn't.

Joe is right to put on urea just before a rain.(within 72 hrs.) Otherwise read my second post on page two liquid fertilizer.
