Anyone ever see 6ft rye. We took a walk back to our field and in three weeks it really sprouted over my 5"11 build. Never seen that before in NE wisconsin.

We grew "Bleached white, long stemed rye straw" (for Race Horse bedding and speciality markets), for the first time this year. With all the rain here in West Michigan it grew well over 6' tall. Did not have any problems cutting with our NH411 discbine. Tedding became a problem as the younger boys thought they were tedding hay and over drove the conditions and wrapped the straw up into the rotors, (what a mess!!!!). The ole NH316 ate it up quite well and ended up yeilding over 150 bales per acre... Good experience, may actually do it again next year.

BuffaloMan, I have grown Rye that was over 6 feet tall during one growing season several years back. I now regret not keeping the tags off those rye bags since I didn't kept track of where the rye originated from or what type it was. This year I had the worst rye size yet, 3 to 5 foot tall and thin, it was from a different company again, The result was half the bales in straw of even last year. It seems like the recent rye varieties keep getting worst for size. Now I'm looking for the biggest variety that I can find if I can find out what the names are for a good growing variety for the SW Pa. region.

Thank, Ray in Pa.

I've no idea how USDA and CDA seed standards compare . However, I grow a variety called "Prima". It will grow 5-6 feet tall. An earlier variety, "Muskateer" grew 6-7+ feet and was a terror to cut. I'd check with your fieldman and ask his/her opinion on the best variey for your area. HTH.

Thanks for the information Rob. I guess if nothing else, I should ask more questions about the rye type and then research it, before buying it from the supplier next time.

Thanks Ray in Pa.

Most of mine is 5 to 7' tall, and is still fairly green. It's not un-common here to have rye that tall, as mines that way every year.
