I just traded for a Woods RM-990 7 1/2' finish mower. It is a '99 model and has the earlier style gear box. It has sat at the dealer since last year due to the gear box lower seals leaking. I talked with Woods Tech Dept and they say it probablly blew them out due to the dip stick breather being plugged. The dealer is fixing it all up and adding a front roller and it already has some chains. Does anyone have one of these?? All I have heard is good things so far! Do you think it would build up enough pressure to blow out the seal?? Thanks, Kent

I contacted the dealer and asked what tractor he had the mower on. I guess my facial expression must have been pretty bad as he kinda looked at me funny when he said a 4020 I thought he was joking but he was serious. I now am wondering if he abused it some how with too big a mule?? I guess either way they are making the gear box right and will stand behind it. When I talked with Woods they said I could rebuild my box for @$325 and I could put on the new style box with a upgrade kit for under $300, that seems a no brainer which to buy if the box is trashed. Thanks for the ideas and help. Kent

Kent,
A lot of people will say a blown seal is because the gear box is not vented. I have plenty of older equipment without vents and the only seals I have blown are due to a worn gear box with way too much runout on the shaft (bad bearings). But, as the gear box gets hot the oil wants to expand, so a vented plug is definitely a good idea. Even King Kutter puts them on their equipment. When I change the oil or check it, I add a vented cap. But I am not tearing out all my plugs to replace them with vented ones. I would wonder why your mower leaked, bad seal, runout? 1999 is pretty new and finish mowers don't take a beating like brush hogs and such. I have seen more than one occasion of seals getting blown because someone fills the gearbox to the top, not to the site plug. Even a tiny burr on the shaft can wreck havoc on a seal.
Just my two cents. Rick

I brought one home from work that had been abandoned as dead. New blades, a belt, ran it for a year. I then fabricated front gauge wheels (originals MIA) and am now on my 3rd season. I love it. Absolutely the only Woods equipment I would consider owning.

Just make sure the breather doesn't get plugged and you won't have pressure build up. Ask your dealer how to check it, and you should be fine.

Robert
