Went to an auction looking for a NH 488 or 489 and a IH side delivery rake, rake went for 550.00 and the 488 went for 1500.00. Instead, I bought a model 12 MF baler for $50.00. I believe that my dad had one over 30 years ago and worked like clock work. The unit was compleate c/w 1/4 turn chut. On the chamber side there was a extra wheel bolted to the wheel, is that extra wheel nessicary and if so why. All things considered the baler looks in pretty good shape, still had clean dry straw in some of the cavities. I drained the oil out of the main gear box( oil was a dark brown and smelled old), the other gear box that turns the plunger feed forks had quite a bit of water in it before some type of oil came out ( oil was a little thicker than water). I replaced both oils with a 80/90 wieght gear oil. On the smaller gear box on the plunger forks, I couldn't find a level plug for referance on how full it should be. Using a piece of wire as a dip stick, I filled it half full through the breather hole when I removed the breath plug. I could not see any other way to add oil. All that is left to do is to tighten up the chain that goes from the main gear box to the plunger gear box. I don't know how the notters are but the left one had sissel and the right had plastic about 1/2 the thickness of the sissel twine. Any thing else I should know about the baler. Thanks

My father in law bought one of those MF 12 balers on a sunday when the IH27 bent the plunger drive. I thought it worked real well That extra wheel is to protect the twine needles when that side goes over or into a woodchuck hole , a common occurence in N.Y. Where I lived in Wi all the woodchucks drown in the winter, the wheel there helps keep that heavy side of the baler afloat.

Great baler- I just finished 1600 bales with mine, I used a JD 2010 to pull the baler. All worked fine.

Ya, you probably got your 50 bucks worth|:)|. I've had one for a long time. The extra wheel it for going in soft ground. You should dismantle the clutch at the flywheel and check the plates for wear, broken springs, etc. Parts are still available from MF dealers. Also, sharpen the twine knives on the knotters. If you have a manual, check the baler's timing - that's the critical thing. Good luck. HTH.
