How much side play

Just got through putting up about 1500 bales this weekend. Could count on one hand the number of bales missed by the old NH68. Great machine. Having a few shape problems though, and I'm suspecting it's worn slides. About how much side play should there be to still be within spec? I want to shim the knife, but not if excessive side play is an issue.
Thanks.

Anything more than 1/8" side movement is probably too much. However, in the real world, if that is all you would allow before shimming, you would be doing it all the time. I'd say up to 1/4" I would let it go. After that, time to do something. Steve

I just redid mine by installing 6 new cam follower bearings ($35 ea at local bearing store). While the ram was out, I sharpened the blades.

My gap is in the 1/16 to 1/8" now whereas it was more like 3/8.

Cuts much more uniform without all the gutwrenching banging it was doing before.

I think sharp blades can make up for a lot of slack.

I guess I got lucky. Looking closely at the baler this morning, I saw the slide adjusters were still all the way out. I guess over forty years of use no one ever thought to tighten them up. A little work with the torch and I'm back within 1/8th of an inch. Now, pulling the ram can wait till after the season.
I found I can dress the blade pretty well if I position the ram about halfway in the chamber, take a small side grinder and reach in through the back access door. Got to be careful not to knick the cutting edge. I've had a heck of a time removing those darn blade bolts. Even with anti-seize on them, twice I've had to tack weld a 5/16ths hex key to get one out after the head stripped on me. You'd think they'd go to a torx bolt by now.

Informative reply. After I replaced my overly worn bearings, I noticed the adjuster you mentioned. So, if I have any more trouble, that's what I'll do.

thanks,

Mark
