OK - I looked closer at the leaking and the serial plate - it is a NH 55 rake - the gearbox has a little leak out the horizontal shaft - you guys said in the last post that the vertical was easy and the horizontal was tougher - how tough is tougher? roughly what is invloved? I am considering doing them both if I have to clean the whole thing up spotless and then fix both ends of the gearbox and give it a new paint job later

First, remove the vertical shaft out of the box. Then, remove the reel assembly from the hub that is on the output shaft. Next, remove the gearbox mounting bolts. The box will pull back a little bit, but you will notice that the hub I previously spoke of will not fit thru the frame of the rake. In the middle of that hub will be a slotted nut. Pull cotter pin and use an 1 1/8" wrench to remove that nut. The hub should(if you are lucky) slide off the shaft alowing the gearbox to come off of the frame. If said hub does not want to slide, get heat and a large hammer. Have fun, Steve

My 55 just had the bearing go out on the horizontal shaft that is out on the business end of the shaft, by the plate. wonder how much I will need to take off to get that apart.

Oy!!! Seals, bearings, one universal yoke - all shot. Now, does the horizontal shaft have an inner bearing? And how the heck do I get to it. Oy.
