Need help with plow set up .

I have a case 3 bottom rope trip plow on rubber tires and a rubber tail wheel. I would say its a late 40's vintage. It has a gear box for triping the plow into the ground. It also has 3 coulers in front of the mouldboards. I put on new tires both the same size in the front 15 in. wheels 8 lugs. It has two hand levers in the front. Also is set up with a packer and drill. I have a 4010 John Deere to pull the plow and drill set up. I cleaned up the mouldboards so they shine. Now my question. How do you set up the plow and make the adjustments. I would like to use this plow on about 10 acres for a bird food plot. I tried to put it in ground but it would not stay in it just kept on triping back up. The field was disked last year and corn was planted. The field condition was Ideal for plowing when I tried. Also the new tires were larger than the old ones because they did not have the old size anymore. I really need help bad with the adjustments on the plow. I think I can set up the drill but any kind of help would be good. I plan on seeding oats.

Sounds like the trip/gear mech is gummed up with hard grease or rusty. It needs to be limbered up, possibly taken apart, cleaned off, & reassembled. Or get some diesel fuel in it, let it soak around, then put the proer grease back in.....

You would need to lower the plow a bit on both sides to make it plow about the same again with the bigger tires. If you are using it with a different tractor than previous years, perhaps it needs many slight adjustments to pull properly.

one quick tug on the rope is all you need to put the plow in the ground, if you hold the rope too long, it will cause the plow to come right back up again. If this is not the case, then you need to take that gear box apart and clean out all the old hard grease and misc. other crud that is probably in there. The two levers on the plow are for setting how deep you want to plow, all the way down(towards the plow frame) will be the shallowest position, raising these levers will cause the plow to go deeper. If the plow is not plowing the same depth on one side as it is on the other, then you need to raise or lower just one lever, or the other, which ever is appropriate. One other thing, if the plow points are dull or misshapened, you will have a difficult time keeping the plow in the ground. A good owners manual is worth it's weight in gold in situations like this. See if you can find one.

Check the roller on the trip; it could be worn so much it won't hold anymore. Also check the cam to make sure it isn't worn off too much to hold. As the other guys mentioned, on the newer trip plows you had to release the trip rope real fast or it came back up.
