John,
My first haybine is and was a 469, still have it but will be getting ready to sell it soon. When I started looking for a second machine when I first started baling and looked at a 489, I didn't like the fact that every used one I looked at the header had got loose and got banged up in the main frame. Got a 488 instead, in fact it was in pieces from a local dealer, he gave me a good deal on it and dealer gave me a discount on the parts it was missing.
I'm running a Deere 1380 hydroswing and a 2280 self proppelled and a Deere 275 disc mower at the present time. Our local New Holland dealer is ok but they ain't that great either!

Like Rick, I will come down on the side of the 488. However, I must inform you that the majority of the farmers DISAGREE!! However, before anyone disagrees with me, let me know if you have spent the past 25 years working on 489/492's. They are the worst engineered New Holland piece of equipment that New Holland ever made as far as maintance and difficulty in service. Don't get me wrong, they work great. I just hate working on them. Also, I can assure you that over a 20 year period, you will spend more on the 489. One more thing: The 488 has been discontinued for about 2 to 3 years. Steve

Steve, I own a 489. What should I be watching out for?

Best Regards,

John

I totally agree with Steve on the 489. So I took drastic measures. I got out my cutting torch and cut some access holes so that I could repair and service mine. Whoever the birdbrain that engineered that thing is I'd like to have him fix mine when it breaks.

Seems he needed some internship in seeing how you fix something, before he put his pencil down on paper to design something.

Another vote for the 488. However Steve either NH has a huge stockpile of 488's or they are still building them. I've seen 3 delivered to my local dealer in crates in the last couple of months.

Production on both models started in 1977. 488's are still built today, the 489 ended in 1989 but lives on through a couple of model progressions. 489's were vastly more popular, a new design that separated the weight of the conditioner rolls from the floating header frame. The 488 is basically a 479 with a simpler driveline. The rolls are mounted on the header frame. I believe the 488 and the 479 that preceded it are superior to the 489 WHEN PROPERLY ADJUSTED FOR HEADER FLOAT. They do not streak on the RH end, do not fail tongue rear pivots, and do not have the driveline running through the tongue. The 489 will transport a little narrower than the 488. Others here have agreed with my opinion in the past. Many, of course, do not.
