I cut with a 14 ft swather and never rake unless I have to. Don't know about Texas but here in southwest Nebraska the wind is likely to come up and raise heck with the windrows.

Wind and windrows, yep wind plays heck with them here!!! Was tryin to rake some a couple of weeks ago to bale the next day, I think everyone of them got scattered right back out again, that is them that didn't roll across the field.
Even had some trouble the next day with the rakes running ahead of the baler too. There is some I don't rake with my 14' cut machines, the windrow is really big enough but I usually rake at least 2 to 1 to speed baling time.

I would suggest a rake, but it is not a must. Reasons for the rake. 1. It will turn the hay over and help it to dry and cure. 2. It will cut your baling time down. As in less trips around the field with the baler and baler tractor. The less you run your baler the less wear and tear on it. It is cheaper to maintain a rake and a small rake tractor than a baler and baler tractor. Reason not to get rake. Less capitial tied up in equipment.

If it rains on your hay, you need the rake to turn it & dry it out. Almost have to have the rake, not that you will _need_ it every baling....
