getting ready to buy a zero turn mower HELP

Hello all,
I am in the market for a zero turn mower and want to make sure I get the right thing. Can any of you recommend anything. I am looking for something around 50 inches wide and want a good quality mower that I can use... for ever. I plan to put about 100 hours a year or so on it. ( I want to mow mine as well as a few others to help pay for it.) I have been looking at the Dixie Chopper and really like it but I am not one to jump in and spend 6000 without research. Please advise.

I just got a ferris 1000Z zero turn a few weeks ago,they are made about 20 miles from here(munnsville,ny). Ferris is VERY popular around here. mine was $6800, 27hp. kohler vtwin, 61" deck

Thanks for all of your help guys. I am going to look at Exmarks this afternoon but the Dixie chopper is probably going to be in my garage because of the price.

Keith, the top 3 commercial ZTR's are: 1-Exmark, 2-Scag, 3-Ferris. Be careful not to be fooled by purchasing something that retails for under $5000. A quality unit with a 48 to 52 inch deck will start at $6000 and up. Dixie Chopper is a very good machine. They are not as popular as some of the others, but very reliable. Steve

I own a lawnservice and have found that different brands of mowers are more popular in different regions of the country. I beleive that the scag turf tiger is the best mower made. The great dane chariot is made very similar and is a little cheaper. They were both engineered by Dane Scag. As far as the best mowing mower made, I would have to go with an Exmark Laser-Z. The exmarks have high blade speed therefore they cut high, wet, and thick grass much better. But, for durability I would go with a Scag or Great Dane. Also, whatever mower you decide to go with, get a kawasaki engine. I have one on a scag walkbehind that has around 5000 hours and has never been touched except for changing the oil.

Here's another vote for Grasshopper or Woodscutter. The best part about a front deck Z-turn is that you can run the deck under low trees and bushes. The only problem I have ever heard is lack of traction on hillsides. If you get one, make sure you ante up for the tractor type tires if you have any sort of slope. For better stability, you should also look into the double castors on back.

For a new one, better plan on anteing up around 7-15 grand (the 15 grand model has a 3 cyl kubota diesel). They hold thier value well, so you'll pay only a little bit less for slightly used.

Grasshopper is a good brand, though I think they would cost quite a bit more than 6000. The city uses them here and they have nothing but good to say about them. I have an old Woods that was made by Grasshopper and that thing just keeps going...it is built like a tank. Rob

I've got two Woods zero turn mowers. The larger one I bought new (6' deck...wow, does that thing mow!) and a used one (model 5160, I think, about 48" deck). Both work great.

Woods uses standard size parts and are easy to work on, for the most part. Many dealers, too.

If you have any slopes to mow, I'd suggest you consider getting ag style, or "bar" type, tires, rather than turf tires on the drive wheels. They work much better on any slope and when the grass might be a little wet or damp.
