Just little tiny things right now, but they grow. Are any of you folks having problems with them? What are you using to control them?

We use Sevin to spray for grasshoppers and army worms. It stops them both pretty well. It is recommended you wait to apply until the population density exceeds 3+ bugs per sq. ft. Another caution is that it shouldn't be rained on for several days after spraying.

The other solution is to field fence and put turkeys out in the pasture. It is amazing how they'll keep a place clean. The poor things will burn 50 calories just to chase down and eat a half-calorie insect.

Sevin does seem to work, the problem is that it nearly always rains again the very next day, and then the little buggers are back again.

If anyone knows of a way to control them, please let the rest of us know. The farm is 20 about Northeast of Waco Texas. It seems the area where it's at (including my father who quit farming it about 12 years ago due to health) is going to grass due to the high cost of putting a crop in and low returns. I have seen a fruit tree that was all leaved out and budding go to a shriveled bunch of twigs in less than a day. Have been told there is an insecticide on the market, but haven't had the chance to check into it because I am not able to be there for very long or very often.

This is the 5th year in a row in North Texas we have had them BAD. They eat pasture faster than the cows can, they eat your hay fields up before you can get it cut, they cut the leaves off every tree in the yard, they ate the window screens off my house. Spraying them with a hand sprayer is a waste, 2 times more move in within hours. Unless you are going to get a plane to spray sections at at a time, forget it. The only thing that seems to give relief is these swarms of grackels? (dirty black/gray birds). They seem to follow the heaviest concentration of the grasshopper swarms and cut down their numbers quite a bit. Weve been told they come in 3 year swarms then go away, been told 7 year swarms. All I know is this is the 5th year and they are thick as ever. When the summer sets in, I will be feeding hay by the end of July. Kinda hard (impossible)to keep your bottom line on the right side of +/- when you have to feed hay that long every year. A cow can eat themselve$ up pretty fast.

a week or two of rain would kill them but I think they will leave when the grass is clear gone.

Yep,

Those little red "mites" on their undersides. Those hoppers just can't handle wet weather.
