First, you are right about the great folks who contribute to this site! No offense meant to any custom haying outfits, as I have done some of that myself. But personally, I would steer clear of any equipment that was used as hard as a custom haycrew would run it.
Although they may have treated it right and maintained it, it still has most likely seen many tons of hay. And, I would imagine there would be a reason a hay company would want to sell it..... Personally, I would go to estate auctions of smaller farmers.
Most likely you will find an older model with relatively few hours on it. You would also be able to stay in budget. I just bought a 30 year old drill on an estate auction. The gentleman farmed only 40 acres and died at 90 years of age. He retired and put his equipment into storage in 1980, so he only used it for a couple of years, so it is in great condition. My only competition for it was the scrap iron dealer and I got it for $15.00. This may be extreme, but there are good deals out there. Talk to area auctioneers and get on their mailing list for upcoming auctions. Hope this helps and good luck!
