I was wondering what other people pay per bale to get their hay hauled in. I've been paying 10 cents per bale per man. Usually try to have 3 of them and one of my boys driving the truck. We usually try to load 2 goosenecks and 2 wagons (about 600 bales) at the end of the day and just back them in the shed and if it rains I'll unload them by myself the next day to save a little money. I don't have any trouble at all getting help, in fact I have to rotate the guys so they all get a chance to work. The dang weather is what I always have trouble with.

I can call the entire high school football team and half the soccer team and still not find two kids to help. I usually pay $10/hr. Last year that was costing me nearly $.50 per bale, and I was having to help a lot more than I meant to. (That's loading out of the field, delivering and stacking.)

Maybe you would like to rotate some of those kids my way. If I had help I could always count on, I could do many thousands of bales. When you've got hay down and no one to help pick it up, the stress is much greater than worrying about whether or not to cut hay because it might rain.

I think to be fair to the kids, you need a good system of handling a lot of bales if you pay on a per bale basis. Otherwise, you should adjust your price.

Has it really been (almost) 20 years since I was a working hay hand?

I thought I was getting RICH at $4/hour (summers of '84 and '85).

Our 6 man crew put up >14,000 bales (for 1 guy) that last summer (1985)...

That's what I got too about the same time. Also have to consider I live just outside of KC. Bunch of spoiled rich brat kids here who really don't have to work.

Have to pay hourly here ($10 if you can find somebody), piecework pay not legal.

I'd say we are in the same ball park, I charge .25 per bale (per time, plus $2.00 a loaded mile, $50.00 minimum) handling when hauling hay and try to keep my cost to $.20 so I get the nickle for risk and profit. Have paid $.20/ number of hands on contract work or (usually) $8.00 an hour for a good hand in the field and $10.00 an hour ricking in the barn. Normally use a NH stackliner so I havent had to pay field help the past few years but we move around a lot of hay in the barns.
