Small square bales

Can anyone help me out with the going rate for small square bales of mixed grass hay(mostly fescue but some orchard grass, and timothy mixed in) in central MO? I have some on the ground (wet now) and more going down when the rain stops, and a couple people wanting some. I haven't bought or sold any square bales for years. Luckily I just cut a few rounds due to just purchasing my square baler and the obvious unknown with it. I'd like to sell it all in the field, but doubt that happens.

I also live in central Mo and so far all of the hay I've sold has been out of the barn for 2.00 to 2.50 a bale. Orchardgrass fescue mix with a sprinkling of clover in it. I ran an ad in the paper starting tomorrow to see if I could sell any out of the field. I wouldn't take any less than 1.50 a bale for it in the field. If you have any storage space at all I would recommend you put it in there and wait til winter to sell it. I had 3000 bales last year and sold it all and still had people wanting more. Planning to bale 7 to 8000 this year.

Here in north central Mo. Macon. You can buy good mix grass hay in the field for $1.00 per bale all summer. If it is pure anything clover,timothy ect. it will be a little higher. I would'nt give over $2.00 for alfalfa in the field. I quit baling for anybody but myself,just not worth the time and effort for the money. A few years ago I baled 500 short (50 lb)bales for a fellow who ,when I called to say the hay was on the ground said he had changed his mind. I went through and cut all the strings on the square bales and sucked them up into the 851 nh round baler and that was the last time I baled for anybody.

I was afraid someone was going to tell me that. Not sure how anyone can sell it for $1.00/bale with fuel prices the way they are, and throw into the equation cost of equipment and repairs (and I don't have much in mine), twine, etc there is nothing left for labor. Last year I burned and brush hogged it all down as I could not find anyone to round bale it. I had 3 promise, but never show up. Perhaps it would be cheaper, and less work and worry to just do the same this year? I can't afford to truck it to where Kelly is :-)

here i eastcentral SD i sell small squares of mix grass for $2.00 a bale, alfalfa for $3-$4 a bale, #800 round grass for $30-$35 and alfalfa for $40-$45. it all depends on how fast they need it, cash or check. hope this helps.

Its all about supply and demand. Some guys cant give it away for $1.50 a bale. Me I could charge $4.00 right now. In 2 weeks it will be $2.00 a bale.
Grab your local shopper and check for people selling hay. Thier prices should be correct for your area.

I priced 200 bales to a friend at work for $1.25/bale, and he said he knew a couple others who might want some. I told him I was giving him a little better price since he had done me a favor or two. Not many square bales for sale in this part of the country, but I am not making much at that price considering the price of fuel. Large round bales are everywhere as everyone had some left over. I am hoping to tap a small market for the square bales for folks who cannot handle the large bales, or only want a few squares to have around. An older gentleman who lives up the road who sold his farm said when he advertised his square bales he had left said people called from over 100 miles away wanting it. If the rain ever quits here I'll get started on it. I have some laying in the field now that I cut Sunday late. No rain on Monday, but rain every day since except today and it looks like it will before I can get off work and in the field.

$1.25 a bale is what I charge just to bale your hay and you get to pick them up. I did sell some rained on hay for $1.75
But if its good, clean and Green. It will stay in my mow untill I get $3.00 + for it.
