Kinda new at this, and I hope I'm in the right place. Just got a 1952 Farmall Super M in decent running condition. I have about 5 acres I want to cut, comb, and bale. I need appx 200 bales of hay a year which I can easily get from the fields I have. Problem is, what exactly is the equipment I need? I know I need a baler, something small, but what is the proper name for the other two pieces of equipment? Mower? Tetters? Not sure. And because of the minimal I'm gonna be doing, can someone make some recommendations on model numbers, size, etc? Any help would be appreciated. Stuck in Maryland.

I can. I started by baling a ten acre field and I did it with the following: Farmall tractor similar to the one you have, semi-mounted sickle bar mower such as JD #5, NH 56 side delivery rake,
and a JD 224T square baler. I'd say that is about the minimum you need. Just for fun, you may want to know what I had INVESTED in the equipment to produce those few bales of hay. JD5 mower was $35, NH 56 rake $500, JD baler $900, Farmall tractor.....

Priceless.

Hey Dave, I really appreciate the info. I figured roughly around $2000.00 to get started. And you're absolutely correct about the Tractor...priceless. Thanks again and Be Well.

My pleasure. You may want to budget a little higher as I am more than a little talented at finding good deals (cheap). Also, the $35 mower took about $250 for new parts, pitman, and a cylinder and hoses so I wouldn't have to get down off the tractor as much (lazy). Be prepared for a certain amount of aggravation as the antique equipment is likely to be a little tempermental.
All in all though, it is a wonderful way to kill a couple of days if it doesn't kill you first.
Good luck and stay safe!

Thanks again. I did figure as much. I get the Lancaster Farmer paper weekly and gave it a glance last night. I suppose I'll budget around $3000.00 It won't be difficult to get that return on investment around here. People are always looking for someone to do the work on their smaller acreage. Be Well. Talk again soon.
