I have an old ford 3pt. disk that I need to replace a broken disk on. The nut that I need to remove to get the old one off is seized. i've tried heat to loosen it but the biggest problem is the whole shaft spins and there is nothing to get ahold of. On the inside end there is a little space around the square head, is there something like a square socket or something that is used to keep the shaft from spinning so you can replace the disks?

Be sure the nut you are attempting to remove is RH threaded. Some were Left hand on one side and Right hand on other side. HTH

No socket that I'm aware of. Try using a LARGE pipe wrench to hold the axle from turning. Grip it on one of the spools. (Spacers between the disc's) Next, you can try an impact wrench on the nut. I've broke a many a "tough nut" loose that way. You may also try to weld something to the end of the axle that will allow you to hold it with a wrench. Last resort..... .Cut the axle. New ones aren't that expensive. I just recently bought 4 new ones for a disc I was repairing. 1" square axle, about 43" long, seems to me like I paid about $21 a piece. (with new nut) John

AS A LAST RESORT DO NOT CUT THE AXEL. IT DOES NOT TAKE AN EXPERT FLAME CUTTER TO CUT AWAY THE NUT WITHOUT HARMING THE THREADS. THE NUT IS CHEAP.

Thanks for the ideas, I'll see if the axel is square stock so I can use a pipe wrench on a spool. If not, that'll be the perfect excuse to buy that blue wrench I've been wanting.
