Can my Case VA hay? What about IH 46?

I've puttered around the horse farm with our VA for 3 years now and it's been pretty handy, but can an old 30hp tractor cut and bale hay? A retiring farmer is offering to GIVE me the baler if I buy the $400 MF mower $450 rake, and all it needs is new needles to tie off the bales. It sounds like a good deal, but can the tractor pull+power that, and is the IH46 a troublesome baler? Any help with this is much appreciated.

Might want to check on the price of needles. JD replacement needles for JD466 and JD467 are pricey. I have no idea how much they cost for an IH.

If you are referring to VA Case, I think the horse power is closer to 22.0. The tractor probably has power enough to pull the baler with small windrows. However, I think it would be dangerous to pull a wagon, your tractor only weighs 3200 pounds and with any slope or hill you
may be in trouble controlling the loaded wagon and baler. As far as the baler, I have had a lot of experience over the past 45 years with IHC balers and they are not easy to keep running, very tempermental to say it gracefully. If the needles were broken I would guess other problems exist and need to be corrected, otherwise
you can replace them again. Good Luck.

Thanks for all the advice. And all this time I was under the impression the tractor had more power than that... It's only 15 acres or so of hay, so it wouldn't kill me to unload the baler and go back with the wagon. I priced out the needles at $310 each. I might walk away from this one, but at least I have a better idea of what to expect. Might grab the rake and mower though. Thanks again.

$310 each? Yikes!!!! New needles for my NH 68 were $58 each.
Go find a good used NH 68 for $200.

Walked away from that 'deal'. We've decided that because it's only 15-20 acres, we'll contract it out to an area farmer that knows the art. Later we might pick up a mower and rake, and leave it to someone else to bale. If we get more fields, only then would we consider buying all the equipment to do it ourselves. Probably less headaches for us that way.

I have a 49 Farmall M that is about 36 hp and a IH 27 baler which is very close to the IH 46. The M does a pretty good job of running the baler. It doesn't have live power, but you get pretty good at popping it out of gear and keeping the baler going. The 46 baler does have an over run clutch built in. We had a 46 when I was young and ran it with a Farmall 460. As long as you keep the knotters clean and don't push them too hard they are good balers. They don't make as tight of bale as the JD's, but I like my 27.

It's kind of a pain to bale without live PTO, but can be done. Best get an overruning coupler for the PTO, so the inertia of the baler doesn't push you through a fence sometime.

I used to have a NH 66 baler, and now have a NH 268. Both of these have an overrunning clutch built into the baler. I'm not sure about IH balers, though. A sickle bar mower doesn't need an overrunning clutch either.

Now that you mention it, I think the 275 did, too. If you cut off the power to the baler, the flywheel would continue to turn until it was stopped by hay in the chamber or just "ran down". So, as to my comment, in the immortal words of Rosanne Rosannadanna, "Never mind".

I am not familiar with the VA, but I think you will be fine using a 30hp tractor for baling and cutting. Growing up, a Farmall 300 was our "big" tractor, and we cut hay with a NH Haybine and baled with a NH w/kicker. The ol' 300 chugged right along without a problem, and that was only in the 30hp class (I think). In a pinch we would bale with the 230, which was only in the mid 20hp range. The only problem I can see is if you are baling in hilly country, the VA may not be heavy enough to hold back the baler and a wagon. That is the only thing I would worry about though.
