....just tried to use my PT 10 for the first time....got halfway around the field and the chain that drives the sweeper (?) hopped off the sprocket.....I took the guard off, but cannot get the chain reconfigured....it seems hopelessly large.....my manual is still in the mail..... can anyone help on this.....it occurred to me that I may have lost a sprocket....there are 4 present....and I see no evidence of this.

There are two different reel chain configurations that I have seen. One is a somewhat L-shape that only contacts on the front and bottom of the big reel drive sprocket. The other chain drive configuration has the chain going around the reel drive sprocket with a more serpentine arrangement for the sprockets.

Bob, sorry to hear of your situation. Yes, there are 4 sprockets - 1 big for collector reel w/ clutch, 3 small for tensioner, conditioner drum, & idler. The chain runs in the shape of a backward "L". The "legs" of the chain are parallel, a couple of inches apart. Are your bearings ok? Did the tensioner sprocket slip? Do components rotate ok?

My old but faithful PT10 happens to be in the shop for lube between cuttings, so I took pix of: a. chain overview,
b. closeup tensioner sprocket, &
c. view of extra sprocket never used & don't know about. If the pix would help, pls send me your email addr at [email protected].

BTW, I lube liberally, including a lot of WD40 on the many metal wear points, esp on the collector reel parts. I've never seen an old MoCo that faithfully keeps on cutting like this PT10.

Bob, hope this helps . . . hope you're blessed with a good cutting in spite of problem!

Glad to hear your PT10 works well! How do you keep it from clogging? My Father used to have a CASE 555 which is the same thing as a PT10 and it clogged multiple times, each and every time we tried to use it! It's no fun prying the hay loose from around the reel whenever this happed either!

Re Clogging - -
Never been a problem for us. We grow brome grass hay, keep sharp teeth in machine and run at the right speed when hay and weather are dry.

Even when we mow thru small saplings, PT10 hasn't clogged, but we do drop down a gear for stands of very thick & tall hay.

Of course, when I snag the hidden old fence wire . . . well, let's not talk about that.
