what is best time to cut hay? before noon, afternoon, aftersupper?
i like to cut before noon but i dont think i'm am gaining much.

this morning in tulsa,ok i ran a nh450hs mower over 20 ac.,at 7am finished at 1030am, waited till 230pm then ran it through our processor(cuts it smaller and helps with the drying time)at 9am tomorrow morning will rake in 1/1 rows, then at 2pm will rake 2/1 rows and will be baling tomorrow night at 630pm (running it through a processor takes 1 1/2 days off drying time). all the bales are already sold to 3 different buyers that has been buying from me for several years they have said in the past that the bales have a nice green tint but not 1 bale has gone bad in all the bales we put through the processor.

I was awakened last night with these strange noises. It sounded like glub, glub, glub.

I got on my britches and got the light and went out back to see.

The hay I cut Sunday (when the weather man predicted no rain this week) was under 3" of water and these little bubbles were coming up.

LOL.

Not quite that bad but bad.

The only good part to this twist is that the second cutting is under there pushing up with this rain and it should be a bute. So for the first, it looks like rounds for the cows rather than squares for the horses.

What's funny is that 3 weeks ago I would have too. The weather was perfect for haying but the grass wasn't ready, no moisture to get it up.

Now it just won't stop. Yesterday it drizzled all day. Beautiful rain if you didn't have hay on the ground.

That's the way it is around here. Feast or famine. Never a reasonable mix.

2-3 weeks ago had 4 inches just south of KC. My neighbors had 10 inches overnight. Few days later I got nearly an inch. Pulled us out of the drought real fast. We were lucky. All this rain was followed by a week of upper 70's low humidity, no rain. Not trying to make anyone feel bad, just saying we had it good for a change and no complaining this time. Makes me wonder why so many of my neighbors still have hay standing?

We cut in the afternoon after the dew is off and the grass is dry,,wet hay is harder to cut and takes a long time to dry,,,Jim

Get you a drum mower or a disc mower and mow anytime of the day in any conditions. The sugar content in hay is highest in the evening.

Any time at all you can find 3 dry days. Have made 3.5 round bales so far - next 6 days are predicted: rain.

I coulda cut hay Friday, baled it Sunday or Monday woulda been terrific if it wouldn't blow out of the baler.....

But no - I listened to the weatherman, didn't cut any..... ...

I cut hay last Thursday. Was supposed to be nice through the weekend according to weatherman. Well, it rained all day Saturday and was cloudy and damp Sunday. Grrrrr. . . . .

Which is (supposedly) why the newscasters (and especially weathermen) are now behind locked doors. Many years ago, an upset farmer went to a station in Memphis and punched the weatherman out.....on live TV. He was tired of the lying.....and aren't we all.

Some research out of UK a few years ago (by Mike Collins, I think) that showed sugars were at a higher level in hay cut in the afternoon. Hay cut before the dew evaporates also will be more brown/yellow than hay cut dry (it is the evaporation of water that discolors hay). With that said, I try to start cutting as soon as the weather breaks (this year that means ruts in the field) and cut 18 hrs a day (try to change drivers at 10 hours) until the rain chance in the 3 day is above 30%.

I have heard that before but have not found any more info. Do you know if that applies to hay cut after dark, or when does the sugar start to go back down?

Long answer: Sugar content begins to go down as soon as the light phase of photosynthesis stops. When sunlight stops the plant stops active photosynthesis (manufactoring sugas/ATP) and continues respiration (consuming sugars/ converting ATP to ADP) and reduceing the stored sugars available in the plant.

Short answer: At them moment the sun sets sugar content should be at its peak and then declining at a steady rate until it bottoms at the moment before the sun rises when sugar content begins to climb.

We would cut from can see to can't see for about two weeks srtaight and let the rake and baler figure out the best time to bale. We only stopped cutting if the baler was going to be down for more than four hours.

It looks like you live in a state that you might be able to get by with that kind of haying. According to the others...you'd get the best and worst...that makes it average.
I only been out in the western states once and made the determination that they get their hay any way they can. They even bale in the median...in between the four lanes...and alongside the roads. As I recall, this was in Montana...maybe Wyoming too. I had to ask what that greenish flowered plant that grew everywhere is...and was told it was prairie clover...that's what they were baling and in places where they didn't bale...you might see antelope grazing on it. Is it good hay or about like our grass hay? Fred OH
