another hydrolic cylinder question

The hydrolic cylinder on my NI 272 cutditioner is a single line set up. The problem I'm having is when I raise the hydrolics it doesn't raise the mower the whole way. If I take and remove the 3/4" plug on the other end of the cylinder it will blow out some oil and raise the correct height. After doing this it will raise and lower correctly a few times then only raise part way again. Bad cylinder? Thanks!

As KC says, the cylinder is leaking past the internal plunger. They can be repaired, some easier than others. You can put a breather plug in the unused port to let air & excess fluid out - which gets kinda messy if your cylinder is leaking bad.

Drill a small hole in the plug to let oil out as it weeps around the cylinder piston seal. OR do it the right way and go to town and buy a vented plug. The seal on the piston is leaking, and will need replaced. Also replace the seal between the rod and piston while it is apart. There are dozens of different types of seals used on these pistons, some are easy and cheap to replace some are very expensive..

That's what I was thinking, but I've never messed with hydrolic cylinders much, so I figured I'd better ask the experts!
