Vermeer 504G - First time round baler?'s

I bought the same baler last year. I am a part-time farmer and NOT an expert on these balers.

On the right side near the front of the baler is a cover that can be removed with two hand screws. There is a drive belt for the pick-up under there with adjustments for tension etc. Your pick-up problem may be there, but there may be no pick-up problem anyway. The pick-up (on mine) will stop when jammed and work again when the machine is cleared.

The drive roller is chain driven accessed through the big doors on the left side. I can't find the shear pin in the book. Sorry.

These balers are closed throat balers. The newer ones are open throat balers. Unless the hay is in perfect condition, bales are hard to start with a closed throat baler. I think this has something to do with the way the starter roller (the one with flaps on it) is designed.

You should also make sure the baler is closed all the way before you bale and that it stays closed when baling. Mine didn't and I had to have the seals replaced in the large cylinders.

Today the hay was in good shape, but the baler wanted create a cylinder of hay between the pick-up and the starter roller before entering the baler. I can't find a fix for it. Any ideas?

As it is now hay season, you can pick up a manual from your nearest dealer for $10-15, probably has one in stock.

I'm trying to remember the sprockets & chain on my 605F - affecting the big bottom roller is quite feat, but must be a chain or sproket on the right side under the panels (assuming a G & F are very similar). Really not a whole lot there, should be pretty obvious - only 3-4 chains to run everything?

Alfalfa is ready to bloom here, we had 4+" of rain last week, and rain is forcast every day for the next 6 days. What to do?
