I have been looking at bale accumalators and read alot of discussion here about them and they look like they might be rough on the bales sliding on the ground especially if the ground is rough, also all of our fields are odd shaped and we cut around the field instead of back and forth like row cropping and I was wondering how they would work in a turn or do they have to run straight all the time like going around trees and telephone poles etc. seems like that would be hard on the bales pulling them sideways and what happens when the baler missties will all the loose hay get caught up in the accumalator, can you pick it up over the broken bales or do you have to stop and clean it all out, just some things that I was considering and thought that I would ask people with experience. Thank You very much

I think you may be referring to some of the newer accumulator systems that are out which scoot the bales on the ground with out using hydraulic tables. The videos I've seen make it look ok but if the ground is wet Id say you'd get a lot of mud on the hay.

Tom, I think that most of your questions have been answered here but there are a couple things. I have hauled a Farmhand 8 bale around a NH 315 for years and dont think it takes a heavy baler as I dont think a 315 is heavy and it is certainly not high capacity so those ideas probably dont hold true. One thing though is certainly correct is you should stop going in circles as its hard on all your equipment but no more so for the accumulator than the rest of it. If you have irregular shaped fields make straight windrows happen as much as you can.
Use of an accumulator doesnt require anything special above whats required for good baling practice. If you travel at normal baling speed the bales will not move around on the accumulator which, on the Farmhand has its own bale hold downs. Hoelscher is much the same way. As you know Steffens hangs the bales from their trailer but does not drag them on the ground only in stubble. The bale group ejection speed is adjustable and must be set according to your tractor travel speed. If you experience a lot of missed ties any one of these units will cause headaches. I normal dont have missed ties of more than 1 per day of several hundred bales. Both Hoelscher and Farmhand bale grabs allow you to stack closer to the barn roof than Steffens who use a center pivot and the grab hangs from it. New both Hoelscher & Steffens cost about the same. Farmhand must be purchased used, as they are no longer made. Most of these arent in to good of condition but are easily fixed. Due to the designs of all of these you must have an auxiliary hydraulic pump or a newer tractor with large pump capacity that can run hydraulic motors. A used Farmhand will cost you in the area of 2-3,000 dollars. They are a real back saver. Good luck.

Tom; I have been using accumulator system 4 seasons now. I have run it on 327Jd and 570NH. I would recommend Hoelscher,Steffens or if you can find old Farmhand unit around yet. Ths Steffens is trailer unit puts bales bundles flat,Farmhand units put 8 flat,Hoelscher puts 10 on edge. This unit becomes solid to your baler. It has two caster wheels under it. They are not hard on the bale chamber cause you will make hitch go clear up to the baler axle. Rick Have a friend that is wanting to sell his old Farmhand unit. Works alright. Give me call if want and I can give you the tricks on how to make them work right. They must be set correctly or you won't get past the 3rd bale.319-257-6764

I don't know what type of accumulator you are looking at, but the ones in use around me are on wheels and the bales don't drag the ground.I would suggest raking in a straight a line as possible, you get better shaped bales,it's easier on the equipment, especially if you have a big accumulator on the baler. If you have a mistie, you will have to stop and clean it out or the loose hay will mess up the accumulator. If you do go with one,put it on a heavy baler, they put alot of stain on the baler frame, chamber, and tongue and an old small baler won't take it.They also seem to work better on a high capacity baler with big windrows so the bales are right there and you aren't driving and driving on a stringy windrow waiting for the next bale, while the ones in the accumulator are getting bounced around or out of place. Most of them around me are on 347,348 Deeres and larger NH balers.
