Getting mu IH 241 ready for some hay. Had to put a new bearing on one of the reels.
Some one had already converted it over to use a standard type bearing and flange. Fleet Farm had them. $12 for the bearing and $4.00 for a new flange.
Dang it I didnt want to put any money in this thing.

That aint nothin' yet. 2 years ago I helped my uncle put in new bearings on his Gehl round baler, and 7 of the rollers were worn on the ends. I brought them into work and my boss built them up and turned them down, $40 an hour, took almost all day. We replaced every bearing in that machine, and built up all but maybe 1 roller, most on both ends. THAT was an expensive project. Thank God I didn't have to help him put them all back in.

Bearings are just an ordinary expense of running machinery- especially anything that is more than 3-5 years old. Your 241 is considerably older than that- like most of the stuff I've farmed with. Just bought a few 1 inch bearings yesterday at JD, about $6 each. Actually pretty cheap for what they do. Needed one, but always keep a few on hand. You mentioned that someone had converted to 'standard'- you don't need to go to an IH dealer to get a bearing for an IH machine- bearings are standard, according to shaft size- one I bought yesterday went on a Gehl mill tonite, the rest will be used on whatever wears out next. Good to keep some on hand- from 3/4 to 1 1/4, or whatever your machines use, along with the locking collars, and bolts for the flanges, etc.

Dont feel bad. I've yet to put up anything but round bale silage (normally have 8000 squares and a thousand rounds by now) and am putting on average, $100 a day in parts into my equipment (tedder teeth mostly).

Your an insperation Kyhayman.
I dont feel bad. I will reuse that $12 bearing when I rip this 241 apart to make my bale unroller.
I still have that thought from last winter.
